City of Edina to celebrate Arbor Day with ceremonial tree
planting
Edina, Minn., April 18, 2011 – On Friday, April 29, the City of Edina will celebrate Arbor
Day by hosting an event at Highlands Park, 5200 Doncaster Way. The City of Edina will
plant three White Pines there to promote environmental awareness in the community.
The White Pines will be planted on the west side of the park along Glengarry Parkway. In
the past, this area was plagued with invasive buckthorn, which was removed by City staff
and neighborhood volunteers. In addition, the park has lost of several large Elm trees from
Dutch Elm Disease.
The Arbor Day event will commence at 10 a.m. with the start of the White Pines tree
planting. The public is invited to attend or aid in the tree planting. City Forester Tom
Horwath will be on site to help with planting and to discuss aspects of City forestry
operations with residents. If case of poor weather, the tree planting will be rescheduled for
a later date.
