All three Edina Liquor locations are collecting food and cash donations to benefit Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People (VEAP). Liquor Operations Director Steve Grausam said this is Edina Liquor’s fourth year participating in the food drive. “We are partnering with MillerCoors and the Minnesota Municipal Beverage Association to gather food and funds for are the state’s food shelves,” he said. “There is a great need in our communities and we want to help.” VEAP is a non-profit agency serving low-income, senior and disabled people in Edina, Bloomington, Richfield and south Minneapolis. According to VEAP’s website, need has increased more than 10 percent in the past few years. To entice people to donate, Edina Liquor will give its customers a 10 percent discount if they donate five non-perishable food items. In addition, store staff will ask customers at checkout if they would like to donate $1 to VEAP, which will be added to the purchase total. The food drive is a statewide project that is supported by many other municipal liquor stores. Statewide donations have increased from 11 tons of food in the 2008 drive to more than 27 tons in 2010. This year, Grausam hopes they can beat that by collecting 30 tons of food. “I know Edinans can help make this goal a reality,” he said. “We are so grateful for the community’s support.” In conjunction with the food drive, Edina Liquor – Southdale will hold a paper-shredding event Saturday, Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Anyone can bring personal and confidential documents for shredding. Though the shredding is free, a donation to a local food shelf is recommended. Edina Liquor staff will give out coupons for 10 percent off a purchase at Edina Liquor when five non-perishable food items are donated at the shredding event. The single store in the state that collects the most food will receive a $1,000 check from MillerCoors and the Minnesota Municipal Beverage Association to donate to the store’s food shelf of choice. The food drive continues through Oct. 31. For more information, contact Grausam at 952-903- 5732. -30-
