Edina’s Edinborough Park to open ‘healthy’ concession stand
Edina, Minn., Oct. 6, 2011 – The City of Edina’s Edinborough Park will open a new and
“healthy” concession stand, “Peak Café,” Saturday, Oct. 15.
Peak Café’s menu has exceeded the standards set forth by Bloomington Public Health (BPH),
which states that of the food and beverage items, 33 percent need to be healthy options. Well
above the standard, Peak Café will open with 45 percent healthy selections. BPH implements
standards from the Institute of Medicine’s guidelines for foods sold outside of schools, as well as
those approved by the Alliance for Healthier Generations.
“We are excited that we are offering healthy options for our guests,” said Edinborough Park
Manager Ann Kattreh. “Edinborough Park is a great venue for kids to exert energy and be
active. We do not want to negate the exercise component of our facility by filling their tummies
with junk food.”
Following are BPH standards for healthy snacks:
No more than 250 calories, no more than 650 for entrees
No more than 35 percent of its calories from fat, excluding legumes, nuts, nut butters,
sees, eggs, non-fried vegetables and cheese packaged for individual sale
No more than 10 percent of its calories from saturated fat, excluding cheese
No more than 35 percent sugar by weight
No more than 480 milligrams of sodium
Following are BPH standards for healthy beverages:
Plain water, non-caffeinated and non-fortified
Non-fat or 1 percent low-fat milk, including soy, cow’s milk, chocolate or other flavored
milk, containing no more than 22 grams of added sugar per 8-ounce serving
100 percent fruit or vegetable juice
Menu options include boneless chicken wings, pizza, hot dogs, “uncrustables,” breadsticks,
nachos, pretzels, bagels, chips, string cheese, yogurt, apples, pudding, jello, fruit cups, “Clif Kid
Treats,” mini doughnuts, cookies, caramel corn, candy, water, milk, juice, soda, coffee, Parrot
Smoothies and Dilly Bars.
“One example we were exploring was a frozen beverage,” said Kattreh. “We searched and
found Parrot Smoothies. They are a frozen beverage the kids will love, but they also meet our
healthy standards!”
