New Fire Truck Arrives at Edina Fire Department
Edina, Minn., Nov. 23, 2011 – A new fire truck recently became part of the Edina Fire
Department’s fleet of vehicles. The new truck replaces the old Engine 82, which was purchased
in 1986.
“The old truck was no longer efficient given the advances in firefighting technology,” said Edina
Fire Chief Marty Scheerer. He noted that the 1986 engine was equipped with manual levers and
pressure and volume controls. The new engine is electronic.
The new engine, also called Engine 82, holds 750 gallons of water, compared to 500 gallons in
the 1986 engine. It also features a firefighting foam tank and portioning system, something the
old engine did not have.
“The new rig holds 250 additional gallons of water compared to the old one,” Scheerer said. “In
the event of a fire, the extra water will add a few very valuable minutes for our firefighters.”
A tighter turning radius, better braking, greater access to rescue equipment, better emergency
lighting, improved crash safety and better fuel efficiency are additional features of the new
truck.
Since Edina’s firefighters are also trained paramedics, the new fire truck also offers interior EMS
storage space that keeps medications and equipment at proper temperatures.
The new truck arrived at Edina Fire Department’s Station No. 1 on Nov. 18 and will be in
service in early December. The custom-built truck cost approximately $400,000, which is
below the average price of a new fire truck. The last time the Fire Department purchased a
new fire truck was in 2005 when Edina 83 was bought.
