Edina Crime Prevention Fund receives generous donation
Edina, Minn., Dec. 7, 2011 – The Edina Crime Prevention Fund has received a $20,000 donation
from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous.
The monetary gift was made with the intention that new tactical ballistic vests be purchased for the
Edina Police Department’s SWAT team. The same donor helped purchase ballistic vests for the
SWAT team seven years ago.
“We are very grateful to receive this generous donation,” said Lt. Jeff Elasky, who serves as
Commander of the SWAT team.
The manufacturer’s warranty on the SWAT vests purchased seven years ago ran out in 2009.
“It’s important that the officers have peace of mind and protection, that they know that the vests
are going to work,” said Elasky about purchasing new vests once the warranty runs out. “The vests
today offer an even higher level of protection and are lighter, too.”
The old vests will be donated to an organization that recycles used equipment and provides it to
police departments in need of ballistic protection. While the manufacturer warranty may be expired,
often the vest will still effectively protect those who do not have one.
New tactical ballistic vests cost about $2,400 each.
