Originating in the United States, the sport has been gaining steady popularity since its introduction in the early 1970s. The game is played on badminton courts using a racquet similar to an enlarged table-tennis racquet and a perforated plastic ball the size of a tennis ball. Teams can be made up of singles or doubles. Pickleball rules are similar to those of tennis and the scoring is the same as in badminton. The family-friendly game has a low-impact nature that has attracted a following of slightly older players. Given the light-weight plastic ball and racquet used, there is less of a chance for impact- relate injuries. On Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Jefferson Park tennis courts, 6700 Thomas Ave., players will have the opportunity to participate in drop-in pickleball. Those wishing to take part in the morning games at the Richfield location will rotate in and out of court games. For a limited time, paddles and balls will be provided for players. Resources for purchasing paddles and balls will be made available at the Jefferson Park tennis courts. Edina will begin hosting Pickle Ball play at Garden Park in August.
