City of Edina mourns loss of part-time employee
Edina, Minn., Jan. 6, 2010 – The Edina Police Department is mourning the loss of Parking
Attendant Cliff Cherrier, who died Tuesday, Jan. 5.
Cherrier, 64, served as Parking Attendant in downtown Edina for eight years, monitoring the
municipal parking lots and three ramps. The part-time position was Cherrier’s “retirement job” after
he ended his longtime career as a State Correctional Officer. Committed to law enforcement,
Cherrier was a member of the Hopkins Police Reserves for 36 years.
“Despite often encountering treacherous weather and pavement conditions, Cliff dutifully and
conscientiously enforced parking regulations at 50th & France for over eight years,” said Police Chief
Jeff Long. “We will miss Cliff’s lighthearted humor and the smile that he brought to work each shift.”
Over the years, many area residents and business owners commended Cherrier for his work at
50th & France. “As a resident of the 50th & France area since 1967, we have always been aware of
the convenience, safety and general cleanliness of the [area.] It is even more reassuring to know that
these qualities are enhanced by the special efforts of people like Cliff Cherrier,” wrote Roy and
Carol Palmquist in a letter to the former Police Chief. “As a frequent shopper in the area, we have
found Cliff to be helpful, courteous and willing to be of assistance in any way possible.”
Cherrier is survived by a son and daughter and two grandchildren. Services will be held 2 p.m.
Saturday, Jan. 9, at Pax Christi Catholic Community in Eden Prairie, where Cherrier resided.
