Just before 5 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 15, the Edina Fire Department received a report of smoke coming from a recessed ceiling light in the kitchen of a home in the 6400 block of Gleason Court in Edina. Crews arrived to find smoke billowing out from multiple ceiling lights in the home’s dining room. Firefighter’s opened the dining room ceiling and discovered more smoke in the attic, but no signs of fire. Crews then moved to a converted three-season room, where a thermal imaging camera showed areas of high temperature in the ceiling. A hose line was brought in and the ceiling was opened. Crews were immediately met with flames that were moving along the underside of the home’s roof. The fire was extinguished within a minute, and responders then removed the remainder of the ceiling and all burned insulation. The fire was confined to the attic with minor smoke damage to the home. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, investigators believe that it may have been started by a radiant heating system that had been installed underneath the insulation in the ceiling of the three-season room. Insurance investigators will be called to the scene, and an electrical engineer may need to examine the heating system to make a final determination.
