Nelson named Deputy Police Chief
Edina, Minn., Feb. 9, 2010 – A longtime member of the Edina Police Department, David Nelson
was promoted to the position of Deputy Police Chief on Friday, Feb. 12.
Nelson began work for the Edina Police Department in 1991, after working as a Patrol Deputy for the
Anoka County Sheriff’s Office. He worked as a patrol and school liaison officer before being
promoted to Investigator in 1997. He was later promoted to Sergeant in 1999 and Lieutenant in 2005.
In addition, he was a member of the Department’s Emergency Response Team for five years and is in
the process of completing his Emergency Management certification.
Nelson, who holds a degree in criminal justice from Metropolitan State University and successfully
completed the FBI’s National Academy in December of 2009.
“Dave’s wide range of law enforcement experience and his commitment to safety in the community
are qualities I was seeking in a Deputy Chief,” said Police Chief Jeff Long upon the appointment.
The Deputy Police Chief assists and supports the Chief of Police in the planning, coordination and
supervision of Police Department personnel. Nelson will work with all department members to
ensure the department carries out its duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with its goals
and objectives.
