Long-time Braemar golfers leave over $300,000 to course
Edina, Minn., May 26, 2010 – The City of Edina recently accepted a large cash donation on behalf
of Braemar Golf Course. The amount of more than $312,000 is the largest cash donation ever
received by the City. The money was left by the estate of Edina residents and long-time Braemar
golfers Wally and Ruth Dahl.
“They used to golf here two to four times a week,” said Course Manager John Valliere. “They loved
the place.”
Wally was a member of the Braemar Men’s Club from 1966 until the time of his death in 1994. His
wife, Ruth, was a member of the Braemar Women’s Club from 1966 to 2005. She continued to play
the course regularly through 2008. She died in January 2009.
The money was left to the Braemar Memorial Fund with no stipulations on its use. The Fund was
established in 1976 for the purpose of enhancing the golf course with equipment and amenities that
might not otherwise be affordable or viewed as a necessity to the golf course. Before the Dahl’s
large donation, the fund has raised approximately $250,000 that has been used to buy televisions for
the clubhouse, yardage markers, and patio furniture and toward small clubhouse and grill
renovations.
Valliere says he was completely surprised and graciously overwhelmed after learning about the
donation. No decision has been made about how to spend the generous gift.
“People in Edina love their parks,” said Valliere. “This is a phenomenal demonstration of that.”
