FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Essig promoted to Edina Fire Department Captain
Edina, Minn., May 10, 2010 – Edina Fire Department Lieutenant Craig Essig was recently
promoted to the position of Captain, filling the role left vacant by the retirement of former Captain
Jim Robinson.
Essig began his fire and emergency medical services career as a paid-on-call firefighter with the
Hopkins Fire Department in 1995. As a paid-on-call volunteer, he completed his Firefighter I & II and
emergency medical technician (EMT) certificates, received state certification as a Hazardous
Materials Specialist and completed his State and National Registry as an EMT- Paramedic.
Shortly after receiving his degree as a paramedic, Essig worked full-time with a poison center where
he triaged and recommended medical treatment to patients who were exposed to various toxins
and household chemicals. In 1998, while employed with the poison center, he joined the Edina Fire
Department as a paid-on-call volunteer and within 5 months, was hired as a fulltime
Firefighter/Paramedic with the Department.
“I am very grateful for the opportunities the City of Edina has given me,” said Essig. “I am truly
amazed at the degree of talent that I have the pleasure of working with each and every day.”
During his 11 years with the Department, Essig has moved up through the ranks from
Firefighter/Paramedic to Lieutenant, and now to Captain. He lives in Minnetonka, Minn. with his wife
of 22 years. The couple has two college-age children.
Essig completed his degree in Fire Science Technology at Hennepin Community Technical College in
the fall of 2007, and received a Public Safety Administration Certificate from Hamline University in
May of this year.
