FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Communications & Marketing Department to sponsor
Explorers post
Edina, Minn., Sept. 23, 2010 – The City of Edina’s Communications & Marketing Department is working to set up a
Communications Explorers post for young people ages 15 to 20 who are interested in pursuing a career in the
communications field.
Exploring is a national program of Learning for Life. Exploring’s purpose is to provide experiences to help young people
mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Organizations that sponsor Explorers posts
match their people and program resources to the interests of young people in the community. The result is a program
of activities that helps youth pursue their special interests, grow and develop. Exploring programs are based on five
areas of emphasis: career opportunities, life skills, citizenship, character education and leadership experience.
There are two other Explorers posts in Edina. The Edina and Eden Prairie police departments co-sponsor a Police
Explorers post. Fairview Southdale Hospital sponsors a Medical Explorers post.
The new Communications Explorers post will be limited to 25 participants. Participants will meet the last Wednesday
evening of the month at Edina City Hall. At each meeting, youth will interact with communications professionals and
learn about career options. Each evening will focus on a different area within the field, such as journalism, graphic design,
video production, photography and more. Participants will also have the chance to sign up for real, hands-on experience
within the Communications & Marketing Department. Opportunities will include writing articles, taking photographs,
designing flyers, assisting on the set of a talk show and helping with video production at televised meetings.
“Our department is excited to offer students insight into possible professions in the communications field and an
opportunity to have real, meaningful hands-on experiences in a workplace setting,” said Communications & Marketing
Director Jennifer Bennerotte. “Edina’s youth are incredibly talented and I have no doubt they will be an asset to our
department as they assist with projects.”
An organizational meeting will be held 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Edina City Hall. Parents are welcome to
attend. Registration is on a first come, first served basis and space is limited. If more than 25 students sign up, a waiting
list will be created. To reserve a spot, call 952-826-0359 and leave your name, address and telephone number. There is
a one-time fee of $14 due at the first meeting, payable to Northern Star Council.
