FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Planning Commission to hold special meeting on proposed
changes to zoning ordinance
Edina, Minn., Sept. 14, 2010 – The Edina Planning Commission will hold a public hearing later this month to discuss
three proposed amendments to the City’s zoning ordinance.
The Planning Commission, which is advisory to the City Council, has been meeting for more than a year to update the
City’s zoning ordinance. The public hearing on its latest proposed amendments will be held during the regular Planning
Commission meeting which starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29 in the Council Chambers of Edina City Hall, 4801 W.
50th St.
The first amendment is a proposed alternative setback ordinance. The ordinance was drafted in response to a recent
Minnesota Supreme Court decision that makes it extremely difficult for cities to grant variances. The proposed
ordinance would allow small additions into a required setback if the existing structure already encroaches into the
setback.
The second proposed change to the zoning ordinance would allow for a Planned Unit Development (PUD) zoning
district. A PUD district would allow the City more control over proposed development, and provide comprehensive
procedures and standards intended to allow more creativity and flexibility in site plan design than would be possible
under a conventional zoning district.
Under the third proposed zoning ordinance amendment, the existing minimum driveway width standard of 12 feet
would be eliminated and a maximum width standard of 30 feet or the width of an existing garage, in single-family
residential areas, would be added.
Based on testimony received at the public hearing, the Planning Commission will make a recommendation to the City
Council, which will act on the proposal later this fall.
