No one was injured, but both Edina High School and Valley View Middle School were evacuated and classes canceled as precautionary measures. School officials say the spill occurred in an area where no students were present. Edina fire crews arrived on the scene at 7:53 a.m. They learned that a chemical neutralization tank – used to hold and neutralize discarded chemicals from the school’s science labs – had backed up and began leaking onto the high school floor. Paramedics examined a school janitor who was present at the time of the spill, but he was released with no signs of injury. A State chemical assessment team, consisting of members of the Hopkins Fire Department, arrived to test the make-up of the chemicals and determine a method of clean-up. Test results showed that the chemical mixture had already been neutralized, and did not pose an immediate health threat. An emergency spill response crew was called in to begin cleaning up the spill.
