Homes At Least 100 Years Old Eligible for Special Designation
Edina, Minn., Jan. 10, 2024 – A new program helps Edina homeowners learn about and celebrate homes that are at least 100 years old.
The Century Homes program, launched this year, recognizes these homes that preserve Edina’s history. The program was created by the Heritage Preservation Commission in collaboration
with the Edina Historical Society with three goals in mind:
Historic awareness – Interested homeowners can share the history of their home on a special City webpage.
Community connection – Designated homes will display a 5x7-inch oval bronze plaque featuring the home’s construction year, prompting neighborhood conversations.
Environmental impact – Extending the lifespan of homes with repair and renovation avoids significant carbon emissions that come from home demolition and construction.
“People who live in 100-year-old homes very likely have an affinity for older structures and an appreciation of the human history they embody,” said Heritage Preservation Commission
Chair Jane Lonnquist. “This program gives them an easy way to share their knowledge of their home's history with the community.”
Edina has 237 homes that are at least a century old, with 35 more that turn 100 in 2024, according to records in the City’s Assessing Division.
Any owner whose Edina home is at least 100 years old can apply. Homes will be featured on the Century Home program webpage and will be recognized during National Preservation Month in
May. The only cost involved is for the bronze plaque, to be mounted on the front façade or in a street-facing window.
The program is voluntary and honorary. It does not qualify homes for local or national historic designation nor place any restrictions on renovations.
Interested homeowners can visit EdinaMN.gov/CenturyHome for more information including the application. The webpage also includes several resources for learning about a home’s history.
There is no deadline to apply; applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
