Established in 2019 by the PGA of America's Player Engagement team, the GameChanger Awards recognize PGA Jr. League coaches for their contributions in expanding opportunities for children to learn and participate in the game of golf. The accolades specifically highlight the Player Engagement Awards, the 25 most extensive PGA Jr. League programs nationwide, along with the leading programs in each of the 41 Largest PGA of America Sections. Edina’s PGA section includes Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and western Wisconsin. Braemar Golf Course PGA Director of Golf Tommy Koehler accepted the award for having the largest program in that section at the 2024 PGA show in late January. Braemar’s junior golf program includes 2,300 youth. Braemar has received the award for five consecutive years. “We are extremely proud of Tommy and his PGA Professional staff for creating the largest PGA Junior League program in Minnesota and one of the top programs in the country,” said Braemar Golf Course General Manager Joe Abood. “Tommy and his staff have created a fun, exciting and competitive environment for junior golfers at Braemar.” “It's great to be recognized for not only me, but for our entire staff for any kind of emphasis we put on Junior Golf through PGA,” said Koehler. Koehler and his staff train youth as young as 3 years old all the way through high school ages. “We try and speak in a language that the kids are familiar with and are going to understand,” Koehler said. “The game of golf is really challenging, so we strive to make it fun, engaging and relatable for the kids.” Koehler's next goal for Braemar’s Junior League program is to create a masters program. The Junior Masters Program is a prominent and extremely competitive junior golf competition that showcases golfers, usually ages 12 to 18, where they have an opportunity to compete against their peers and display their skills. PGA Junior Leage registration opens March 4. It is a seven-week summer season.
