The sale preview begins Tuesday, Feb. 20, with the sale opening at noon Monday, Feb. 26. Trees are $50 each and will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. Limit two trees per Edina address. This year’s sale features 18 species and a total of 1,000 trees. At pickup, which will be in May, most trees will be 4 to 8 feet tall, so they have a healthy start but still are easy to plant into a yard. All are climate adaptable and grow well in Minnesota. Last year’s sale, which featured 10 species and a total of 200 trees, was 95 percent sold out in the first hour. “We had a survey last year after the sale,” said Forester Luther Overholt. “From the survey, we learned that people wanted more fruit trees and a greater variety of trees to pick from. So, this year we’ve expanded our tree list and the number of trees.” Buyers can choose among these trees: Fruit: North Star Cherry, Zestar Apple, Mount Royal Plum Small to Mid-size: Blue Beech, Ironwood Flowering: Serviceberry (multi-stem), Minnesota Redbud, Royal Raindrops Crabapple Conifer: Black Hills Spruce, Tamarack, White Pine, Eastern Red Cedar/Juniper Shade Trees: Gingko (specific type TBD), Skyline Honeylocust, Regal Prince Oak, Swamp White Oak Hackberry, Redmond Linden Photos and detailed descriptions of each, including size and tips on where to plant them, can be found in the sale preview at bit.ly/edinatreesale2024. Purchased trees will be available for pickup 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 11; 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, May 12; or 5-7 p.m. Monday, May 13. The pickup will be in Edina at a location to be announced. Buyers will be notified of the pickup location. Buyers who can’t make those times can have another person pick up their trees. All trees will come with planting information and a complimentary bag of mulch, courtesy of Tree Trust. The City of Edina is also providing a free bag of compost made from the City’s curbside organics recycling program. The sale is in partnership with Tree Trust and is part of reaching the City’s Climate Action Plan goal to increase the tree canopy from 36% to 43% by 2040. “The tree sale is a great way to get more trees on private property,” Overholt said. The City also will be planting about 500 trees on public property this year. That effort will kick off noon to 4 p.m. Friday, April 26, at the annual Arbor Day celebration. People can watch a tree being planted and then will head out across Centennial Lakes Park and the Edina Promenade to plant trees. More details and signup information is to be announced.
