The reuse-focused event will be held 4-7 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at Braemar Arena’s Backyard Rink, 7501 Ikola Way. The clothing swap is open to everyone, including nonresidents and families. Participants are encouraged to bring clothing to swap with other people, but no donation is required to join and everything is free to take home. The drop-off for clothing donations will be 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Braemar Arena’s main entrance. Directional signs will be posted. This allows people to donate clothing even if they cannot attend the main swapping event the next day. Clothing for all ages and types are encouraged for the swap. A special collection this year will include Halloween costumes (human and pets). Several community organizations will be onsite connecting people to resources and activities that further our climate action goals. “This annual event has become a pillar of reuse and waste reduction in our community. We want everyone to join in and be a part of this much-needed type of activity. ‘Everyone’ means intentionally encouraging people who are unfamiliar with or hesitant to try secondhand. Not sending our clothes to the landfill is woven into the fabric of our community,” said Twila Singh, Organics Recycling Coordinator for the City of Edina. “Start thinking ahead by collecting your apparel that could be swapped, and don’t forget to bring along someone who has not attended previously!” All leftover clothing is donated at the end of the event to local partners. Almost 80 percent of what was brought in 2023 was swapped at the event, according to Singh. To make the event a success, many volunteers and partners are needed. Duties include setting up the event, accepting donations, weighing bags, counting attendance and cleaning up after. Accompanied minors, teams and groups are all welcomed. If interested, fill out the volunteer form at https://bit.ly/3T0PARr. Community partners involved in reuse and waste reduction are encouraged to reserve a table spot at the event to share resources and information or create an interactive booth to educate the public. Table spots are free and special equipment and power can be requested. To reserve a spot, fill out a form at https://bit.ly/3wHu2By. Sign up to volunteer or reserve a table by April 18.
