HomeMy WebLinkAboutEditionEdina_March-2024-WebGeneral Manager Named for Braemar Arena & Field
Jesse Buchholz Has Extensive Experience in Arena Management and Operations
BY DEBBIE TOWNSEND
Growing up playing hockey, then
working at arenas around the country,
Jesse Buchholz had long known about
Braemar Arena, though he’d never set
foot in Edina.
So when he toured Braemar during
his interview for the General Manager
position, he was understandably awed.
“The history of the facility and the
history of hockey and skating culture
there is well known,” he said. “Walking
through the lobby and seeing all the
players who have gone on to play at the
NCAA and pro levels was impressive.”
Buchholz starts his new position managing
Braemar Arena & Field March 11, but he
has been preparing for it all his life. The
Michigan native’s resume includes hockey
instructor, Zamboni driver, Operations
Technician and Director of Scheduling at
an indoor arena in Arizona, Recreation
Coordinator at a Utah arena and most
recently Ice Arena Manager for the City
of Janesville, Wisconsin.
“At this point, there isn’t anything at an
ice rink I haven’t done,” he said.
He’s worked at the practice facility for
the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes and managed
the home arena of the Janesville Jets
of the North American Hockey League.
He’s overseen operations of baseball,
softball and turf fields and fitness facilities.
He’s also a Certified Ice Rink Manager,
considered the highest professional
designation in his field.
“Jesse has a broad experience in overall
facility management, ice operations,
facility rentals and programs that staff
thought would be a great fit for Braemar
Arena & Field,” said Tracy Petersen,
Parks & Recreation Assistant Director –
Recreation & Facilities. “He is a passionate,
innovative and engaging leader who learns
quickly, which will be key as Braemar
Arena continues to evolve and expand.”
His final major project in Janesville
just broke ground: A sports complex
that includes two sheets of ice and
convention space. He expects that
experience will help him as Braemar
Arena undergoes $45.2 million in
expansion and updates, including
adding a fourth sheet of indoor ice and
replacing decades-old critical systems.
“I think the expansion and renovations
are exciting,” Buchholz said. “I love
working in an environment that’s
constantly changing. I don’t like to get
bored. I enjoy seeing progress made.”
He also likes working with various
groups, from hockey players to
figure skaters, athletic associations
to professional organizations.
“Jesse is excited and eager to continue
to cultivate the strong partnerships
that make Braemar Arena & Field
successful and a strong part of the
Edina community,” Petersen said. “He
is looking forward to engaging with
the community and listening to users
on ways to improve and enhance
operations and service.”
Buchholz will be reachable
at jbuchholz@EdinaMN.gov
or 952-833-9506.
Jesse Buchholz will manage both the ice arena and the turf field that’s domed in colder months.

City Awards Bids for Fire Station 2
Construction is Expected to Begin in May
The City will break ground for a new Fire
Station 2 later this spring.
The City purchased 4401 W. 76th St. and
demolished the building on the site to
construct a new 33,578-square-foot Fire
Station, which would also include space for
the department’s Public Health Division. The
new Fire Station 2 will replace the one on
York Avenue, which is too small to meet the
department’s needs.
The current Fire Station 2 on York Avenue only
provides advanced life support ambulance
service. A single reserve fire engine is at the
location, leaving the greater Southdale area
underserved for fire protection, according to
a 2019 study by Five Bugles Design. The study
also found that call density in the eastern half
of the city is expected to grow.
The City Council in February approved bids for
the project, which came in nearly $1.3 million
higher than expected. Staff evaluated several
options to reduce costs, but found the impacts
of those changes substantial and requested
the Council approve the bids and grant a
budget increase to cover the difference.
Kraus-Anderson Construction Company was
assigned the majority of the construction
contracts. Ebert, Inc., will be the project
carpenter. Metro Garage Door Company will
install the specialty doors. Rickway, Inc., was
awarded the flooring contract and Laketown
Electric Corporation the electrical.
The new Fire Station 2 is anticipated to be
operational in late 2025.
In other business last month, the City Council:
•Expanded the City’s annual tree sale.
Last year, the City partnered with Tree Trust
to sell 200 trees of 10 different varieties.
The majority of the trees were sold with 15
minutes of the start of the sale. The trees
were completely sold out within three days.
Property owners were limited to purchasing
one tree.
This year’s tree sale, which started Feb.
26, includes 1,000 native and climate-
adaptable trees. Residents will be able to
buy two trees per property. Each tree will
be sold for $50 to offset the City’s cost of
the program.
•Reviewed a sketch plan for a proposed
affordable housing redevelopment at
5780 Lincoln Drive. Council Members
gave non-binding feedback, but generally
discouraged the developer, Solhelm,
from moving forward. The City plans to
complete a small area plan for the area to
guide future development.
The City Council will next meet 7 p.m.
March 6 and 19. For more information,
visit EdinaMN.gov.
