Spokes, James Van Valkenburg, Merry Krueger and Charlotte Scanlan Diana Hedges, Mollie Paulson, and Solvei Swenson Meeting called to order 7:35 a.m. I. MINUTES No meetings were held in April, May and June. II. CHARLOTTE SCANLAN RESIGNATION Charlotte Scanlan resigned from the Art Center Board. Sandra Clark nominated Heather Randalking to the board. Elizabeth Eisenbrey concurred. Diana Hedges stated for Peter R. Spokes his recommendation of Bill Greer to the board. III. DIRECTOR'S REPORT A. CELEBRATE THE ARTS Diana reported that the board needs to pick a date for "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen" fundraiser and confirm the location. There was discussion about Edinborough or Braemar for the location. DODIE PAUL MOVED TO HOLD CELEBRATE THE ARTS ON MARCH 20, 1993 AT BRAEMAR GOLF COURSE. DON PEDDIE SECONDED. MOTION CARRIED. B. COMMITTEES FOR CELEBRATE THE ARTS Diana Hedges reported that Dee Dege has volunteered to do Thank- yous; Suzie Kelm will work on Publicity; and Sandy Clark will work on Invitations and Decorations. Ms. Hedges suggested having someone work on commission and do the auction. That person would organize and run the auction and they would receive ten percent of the total. DEE DEGE MOVED TO HAVE AN AUCTION COORDINATOR WORKING ON A TEN PERCENT COMMISSION. ELIZABETH EISENBREY SECONDED. MOTION CARRIED. C. OTHER Trip to New Mexico was a success. The Art Center made a profit of $1400. Fred Somers took a group to Cascade Lodge. The Art Center's profit was almost $500. Upcoming tours: another trip to New Mexico and in 1994 a trip to France. They would spend 10 to 12 days in France. Benefit Sale made over $1000. Many of Jeannette Stordahl's pictures sold. Classes: down about 120-130 students. The summer camps have a lower ratio then last year; 8 to 1 for the 3 to 5 year olds and 10 to 1 for the older children. This meets the Art Centers goal of a more guided education. IV. GALLERY REPORT - MOLLIE PAULSON Juried show planning is underway. Names need to be submitted by today to Mollie. Show will be held in October. Check-in is October 1. Ms. Paulson is currently working on obtaining money to support the event. There will be awards of $50 and $25 for best pictures. There will not be any categories as in the past. Edinborough - two photographs were stolen and later returned. Ms. Paulson is working with Edinborough staff for a better security system. V. OTHER Liz Eisenbrey distributed a letter to the board regarding advertising for the Fall Programs. She had inquired with the Sun newspapers on advertising alternatives. Diana Hedges expressed a concern on the impact on the budget. An article in the Sun was suggested as an alternative to purchasing space. However, free publicity will be sought for the "Sweet Sixteen" fundraiser, so the board does not want to over use the Sun for other articles right now. Dodi Paul suggested creating an "ACE" award for contributions to the art center. This would require changing the art center's name from the Edina Art Center to the Art Center of Edina, which could be an expense. Ms. Eisenbrey pointed out that money raised through increased memberships can save having to increase class fees and tax payers monies. The board will consider the options presented. MEETING ADJOURNED 8:00 A.M. July 15, 1992 TO: The Chairman and members of the Edina Art Center Board FROM: Elizabeth Eisenbrey, Chairman, Membership RE: Advertising As Membership Chairman, I have been looking into possibilities for advertising our Fall Program and facilities to a wider audience, thereby increasing our members. I decided that a "flyer" enclosed in the Edina SUN newspaper might be a good way and therefore contacted "Dennis" (869-4797) at the Sun Newspaper office. Dennis says enclosing a flyer in the Edina SUN only, would reach 16,890 homes. He suggested either an 8 1/2 x 11 sized sheet or (more customary) an 11 x 17" sheet. Cost would be 320 a thousand, equalling a charge of $500.40. On a descending scale, an 8 1/2 x 11" sheet would be $480.00 which I informed Dennis was not (considering our budget) a steep enough descent. In the interests of economy, I offered to have said insert pre-folded, even' inserted, into the newspaper. (I would have been the volunteer folder/inserter). Dennis said, "Impossible! All work is done at the printers in Shakopee!" I offered to go to Shakopee. Dennis countered by saying they wouldn't let me in. I conceded defeat on that point. Dennis suggested display advertising in the newspaper. An ad of our own design, delivered by Friday, 4 pm latest, will appear on the following Wednesday edition. A quarter page, 3 columns across or 6 3/16" by 7 " down will cost $182.70. I invite the Board to consider such an expenditure. Even though obviously we are not losing members and even, such is the excellence of our programs, gaining members, we need to reach a much wider group of students and patrons. I urge the Edina Art Center Board to consider such a step to coincide with our Fall program. ,
