CALL TO ORDER Meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. H. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes for the last meeting were approved. III. MEDIA STUDIOS REPORT Phil Johnson reported that Fall-1 classes had begun and registrations were on the increase. Video editing business was increasing but rental of the photo studio had fallen off. The computers and other technology had stabilized. Marketing contacts with schools, Boy Scout and Girl Scout organizations and community groups were continuing. IV. DIRECTOR'S REPORT Ms Hedges offered the following items: A. A meeting was held on September 1St, with the Edina Community Education Services staff to discuss duplication of education offerings. John Keprios outlined the Art Center's concerns that Community Education offerings in the fine arts area were impacting EAC revenues. He also asked for the Community Education staff interpretation of the prior agreement between the Art Center and Community Education. Doug Johnson, Community Center Manager, responded that the Community Education offerings are meeting a demand that the Art Center cannot meet and therefore are not a duplication of services. No agreement was reached during the meeting. Board members discussion centered around two issues: 1) the differentials in instructor pay rate which had caused clay and cartooning instructors to teach summer camp classes at the Community Center instead of EAC; and 2) the Community Education contention that the people attending classes at the Community Center would not take same or similar class offerings at EAC because of limited class day and convenience of location. This matter was tabled for discussion at the next meeting. B. Another record setting Fall is underway. We have lots of waiting lists. Bradley added another pottery class on Thursdays. Registration for Fall-2 classes begins on October 7 for members and October 14 for non-members. Edina Art Center Board September 23, 1999 Page 2 C. Membership continues to increase. We will finish 1999 well over the 6,000 mark. A substantial portion of the increase has resulted from people using the Media Studios. We are recommending that the cost of memberships will remain the same for year 2000. D. The Gallery will be busy with a Juried Show running September 9 through October 20, and the Holiday Sale November 7 through December 23. E. Thank You's were offered to all Board members and staff who had been so active over the past few months. Special thanks to: Dodie Paul — Uptown Art Fair and Juried Show. Liz Eisenbrey — Uptown Art Fair and all of those membership letters. Sandy Clark — donation of hundreds of pressed flowers, computer equipment and many purchases in the Clark Gift Gallery. George Kuebler — Uptown Art Fair, distributing phoenix brochures, and Juried Show. Gene Andersen — for being here every week for hours doing everything imaginable and also on the Reorganization of the Garage Committee. Jim Van Valkenburg and Mike Kelly — for working on the Community Center issue. Art Dickey — for helping us write the grant application for the Rotary Club and for working on the Community Center issue. Dee Dege — Uptown Art Fair. John Keprios — who is always here to support us. Many thanks for saving our sign. All of the Staff — who keep this place running. F. Other Topics The basement bathroom remodeling is substantially completed. Bradley saved us thousands by doing all of the tile and ceiling work himself while contracting out the work required by codes. Changes to the Clark Gift Gallery are being planned. The intent is to utilize space more efficiently and attractively. Sandy Clark offered to help fund new displays and shelving. This offer was accepted with gratitude. Dodie Paul brought in several design ideas for flags which could be displayed in front of the Art Center to facilitate identification by motorists on the Crosstown Highway. This matter will be explored in future meetings. Two people have expressed interest in the open Board positions. Jim Van Valkenburg will follow up. Next Board Meeting is October 28 at 4:00 p.m. V. ADJOURNMENT Meeting adjourned at 4:50 p.m.
