MEDIA STUDIOS Phil Johnson reported that the consolidation of the media studios was complete. The last few weeks had seen an uptick in appointments, seeming to signal the start of the pre-holiday busy season. The staff is coping with increased complexity in what customers want to do with their movies, slides, pictures and audio work. Some people want to capture their media on DVD disks and then edit the content on their home computers. This is not as easy as people assume it will be. Phil is researching methods to handle these technology variations. JURIED SHOW Brad Benn reported for Ruth Valgemae. The final results are: 340 artist entries, 118 entries were juried in (80 of these were two-dimensional). 10 Awards of Excellence ($50 each), 10 Awards of Merit ($25 each). The Peer Award went to xxx. Income from the Juried show totaled $6, 450 comprised of $2,625 in entry fees and $3825 in donations. . Donations included wine for the reception from 44th and France Liquors and Gene & Ken Andersen as well as napkins, plates and plastic glasses from Gene Andersen. Donations in kind were received from Crystal Catering. Expenses totaled $1,460 including postage, Awards of Excellence and Merit, Peer Award, Judges Honorarium, food for the reception and wine. Sincere thanks are due Honorary Co-Chairs Sandy and Ron Clark, committee members Gene Andersen, Dee Dege, Eddi Fesler, Linda Kieffer, Heather Randall King, Kathleen Sovell, the EAC staff and all the volunteers involved. This show wouldn't happen without you!. The dates for next year's Juried Show are September 8 — October 18, 2005. Heather King asked if the show had to begin on Labor Day Weekend when it is difficult to get participation with people going to their lake homes for an end of season stay. Diana Hedges responded that a later start date would disturb the class schedules shifting start dates throughout the following class year. There is no good alternative to the early September start for the Juried Show. The Donor Recognition Reception was not well attended although considerable effort was expended for invitations and upgraded food. If the donor list were to grow significantly, it might be worth the effort to plan one for next year. Attendance at the Opening Reception was very good with many attendees expressing their appreciation for the quality of the work on display. OUTREACH ACTIVITIES AND EDINA PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE Linda Kieffer reported that some of her work is now on display at Jerry's supermarket. November thru January will feature Yumi Yokogama. Also in November and December, the artists in residence at the Edina Senior Center will display and sell their work. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Senior Center and the Art Center. A meeting will be held next week with the Edina Library staff to resume exhibits in the new Library building. Efforts are also underway to arrange exhibits at the Hennepin County Library on York Avenue. Face Painting and Tie Dye will be done by Art Academy students. Dee Dege was able to get a great deal on t-shirts for the event; just a few pennies over $1. We will use leftover dyes from another project. The Media Studios will do a digital derby and take kids digital photos. Bradley will coordinate the Make One / Take One Tile Project. Peggy Nelson will be presenting music for Children. We need balloons up the morning of or the night before. Also, need a greeting crew, clean up crew, refreshment folks. Ask Eddi Fesler for details. Art on the Town maps containing passport entry forms will be available here for visitors to pick up. Edina Federated Women's Grant: Although we made the top five choices, we did not receive the requested grant. School of Realism: We have 6 people in the School of Realism. Four of them will have their studios here and two (Kathy and Kim) will keep their studios at the Senior Center. We will have two studios to rent here at $125 per month. Instructor Michael Frey thinks he has some people who may be interested. Our goal is to bring in $10,000 per year for that space. See the pamphlet for more information. The $1,000 grant from Sandy and Ron Clark may be used for "where we need it the most" so we may put off the skylight idea, because we need to do proper ventilation and curtain dividers first. We also need a few more casts. Brad Benn reported that EAC participated in a Clay Festival at the Swedish Institute on Saturday, September 18th. Because of the efforts of several dedicated volunteers, nearly $200 in donations were received from parents of kids participating in the kid's tile making activity. Mailing Lists: During the August meeting, Dee Dege had advised caution in giving names of minor children to the Minneapolis Children's Theatre to share mailing lists for recruitment and publicity. Our Edina City Clerk, Deb Mangen, recommended that only family names be traded and that children not be included in the mailing addresses. This would mean that our mailing labels to a child's home would be addressed to " The Adams Family" at xxx address. November Gift Sale: The sale begins November 1 and runs through December 23. OTHER BUSINESS Financial reports were distributed to Board members. A request was made for explanatory remarks to be added to help the members become familiar with the information contained in the reports. During a discussion of facility rentals and sources of donations, Ruth Valgemae asked if the source of each donation could be broken out by type of event or type of group. Diana Hedges will follow up with Office Manager Mary Dvorak, who books the events, and Bookkeeper Naomi Johnson, who tracks fee receipts, to determine if this information can be obtained. Diana Hedges reviewed fees and prices for 2005 that had been submitted to the Park Board for approval. She will report on the Park Board's action at the next meeting. Dee Dege asked if EAC gives discounts to people with disabilities or health issues. Diana Hedges responded that scholarships are available to people with a wide variety of special needs, including disabilities and health issues. Heather Randall King reminded board members that she had not received the requested responses to her survey of ideas for fund raisers. The responses should be in writing. These ideas and responses will be discussed at the October Board meeting. ADJOURNMENT -The meeting was adjourned at 5:15 pm. 7
