Five species of vegetation were sampled during the survey: Curlyleaf pondweed Elodea canadensis Small pondweed spp. Coontail Nitella spp. The point intercept survey consisted of 49 points. A meandering delineation was also performed to detect any additional curlyleaf pondweed not in the proximity of a site. At each site depth was recorded and vegetation was sampled with a double-sided rake. For every species sampled, an abundance rating was assigned based on how much was sampled on the rake. The ratings are as follows: Plant species absent Plant species covers <25% of the rake Plant species covers 25-75% of the rake Plant species covers >75% of the rake This rating scale was taken out of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Guidance for Delineating Aquatic Plants for Management. Curlyleaf pondweed was not abundant in Melody Lake (See figure 1). It was only found at 5 sites (frequency of occurrence: 10%) with an average rake abundance of 1 at sites where it was collected. Elodea canadensis was the most abundant plant species in Melody Lake (See figure 2). It was found at 40 sites (frequency of occurrence: 82%) with an average rake abundance of 1.8 at the sites where it was collected. Nitella spp was found at 14 sites (frequency of occurrence: 29%) with an average rake abundance of 1.35 at the sites where it was collected (See figure 3). The depth where Nitella was more frequent was 2ft. Coontail was found at 17 sites (frequency of occurrence: 35%) with an average rake abundance of 1.1 at the sites where it was collected (see figure 4). Small pondweed spp was found at 6 sites (frequency of occurrence: 12%) with an average rake abundance of 1 (see figure 5). Plant growth was immature and an accurate ID was not able to be obtained. / Figure 1: Melody Lake CLP distribution and abundance / Figure 2: Melody Lake Elodea canadensis distribution and abundance / Figure 3: Melody Lake Nitella spp distribution and abundance / Figure 4: Melody Lake coontail distribution and abundance / Figure 5: Melody Lake small pondweed spp distribution and abundance
