Flushing will continue around the city for approximately two to three weeks. Spring hydrant flushing is necessary to clean the water mains after the lower water demands of winter and minimize the amount of naturally occurring minerals, like irons and manganese, into homes during the high-demand summer season. It also allows the Utilities Division to identify hydrants in need of maintenance. “Since Edina has a single, interconnected system, residents may temporarily notice rust-colored water off and on while hydrant flushing is taking place, no matter where you are in the city. It’s important to know the water is safe to drink. There is the potential for the water to stain laundry, though, so please check for signs of discoloration before washing clothes,” said Public Works Assistant Director Dave Goergen. If the water is discolored when you turn on your tap, simply run it until it is clear. If you encounter red or brown staining on your clothing while doing laundry, do not dry. Instead, contact Public Works for a free iron-removing product and then rewash. If you have any questions or concerns about the program, call the Utilities Division of Public Works at 952-826-0375. -30-
