New this year, Edina Liquor will be on hand offering beer and wine samples to volunteers 21 and over. Plus, a limited number of free tree saplings will be given to volunteers to take one home and plant in their own yards. Volunteers of all ages are welcome as there are tasks for everyone. Those who volunteer are asked to meet at Hughes Pavilion at Centennial Lakes Park, 7499 France Ave. S, at noon Friday, April 26. Park Maintenance staff will demonstrate how to properly plant a tree, then divide the volunteers into groups that will fan out across the park and Promenade to plant more trees. Prior to the event, Park Maintenance will use an auger to break up the soil at the planting spots, so no heavy digging will be required. Shovels and other equipment will be provided. Volunteers should bring gloves and wear closed-toed shoes and clothes they don’t mind getting dirty. Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. Those planning to partake in beer and wine sampling must bring a photo ID. Volunteers are asked to register in advance at EdinaMN.gov/ArborDay to help plan the needed supplies and groups. Walk-up volunteers can register at the event. The Arbor Day Celebration kicks off the effort to plant about 500 trees on public property across Edina in 2024. To encourage planting more trees on private property, the City partnered with Tree Trust earlier this year to sell 600 trees to Edina residents for just $50 each. Another sale this fall will offer 400 trees; details will be announced. For more information, contact Forester Luther Overholt at LOverholt@EdinaMN.gov or 952-826-0308. -30-
