Summer Street Reconstruction Near Edina City Hall Begins June 10
Project area includes Grange Road and Part of West 50th Street
Edina, Minn., June 5, 2024 – Street reconstruction of Grange Road and West 50th Street around Edina City Hall is scheduled to begin Monday, June 10, and continue until the third week
of August.
The project includes two work zones: Grange Road from the Minnesota Highway 100 northbound (Hwy 100 N) on- and off-ramps to West 50th Street and West 50th from Grange to just east of
Dale Drive.
Improvements being made include:
New traffic signal system and two additional crosswalks at the intersection of Grange and West 50th
New accessible pedestrian signals that provide audible crossing information
Medians on West 50th to narrow lanes and slow traffic
Protected left-turn lane from West 50th onto Grange
Designated left-turn lane from West 50th onto Dale
Addition of wide sidewalks (ranging from 8 to 10 feet wide) along both sides of West 50th in the project area
Completing the first section of a new wide 10-foot-wide sidewalk on Grange from West 50th that will eventually connect to Eden Avenue after a subsequent project in 2025
The reconstruction project is part of the larger plan to improve safety for all modes of transportation in the Grandview District area, as outlined in the Grandview East Area Transportation
Study. It builds on the work the City did last year when two roundabouts were added along Eden Avenue.
“The goal of this project is to improve safety for both vehicles and pedestrians within the district. We want to provide safe and comfortable sidewalks for people walking and biking
in the area, in addition to slowing traffic and protecting left turns on West 50th Street,” said Engineering Director Chad Millner.
Traffic Impacts and Detours
Hwy100 N On- and Off-Ramps at Grange: Access to and from the Hwy 100 N on- and off-ramps at Grange will be limited during the project. Drivers should plan for the ramps to be closed,
although depending on the phase of work, the contractor may have them open at certain times. When the ramps are closed, designated signage will be posted to inform drivers of detours.
Detour for Accessing Hwy 100 N: If the on-ramp at Grange is closed,
drivers can instead access Hwy 100 N from the on-ramp from
West 50th, located after the Vernon Avenue bridge when traveling
eastbound.
Detour for Exiting Hwy 100 N: If the off-ramp at Grange is closed (Vernon and West 50th Exit), drivers will need to continue northbound to the next exit at Excelsior Boulevard.
From there, the official detour is France Avenue southbound to West 50th or Hwy 100 S to the West 50th and Vernon exit.
West 50th Street: A portion of West 50th Street will be closed spanning from Grange to just east of Dale. The local detour will be Eden.
Traffic heading westbound in this area on West 50th will be diverted at City Hall onto Eden Avenue.
Traffic heading eastbound in this area on West 50th will be diverted onto Hwy 100 N just before Grange.
Visiting Edina City Hall: Visitors to City Hall will need to use the Eden entrance and exit until the project is complete.
Dale Drive: To access residential areas off Dale, drivers will need to use East Sunnyslope Road.
Detour maps and ongoing information about the project can be found on BetterTogetherEdina.org.
