HomeMy WebLinkAboutK-9 Gryf's Retirement PartyContact: Lauren Siebenaler, Senior Communications Coordinator Phone 952-833-9537 • LSiebenaler@EdinaMN.gov • EdinaMN.gov  FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE  Celebrate K-9 Gryf’s Retirement at Centennial Lakes Park Edina, Minn., June 18, 2024 – The Edina Police Department invites the public to a retirement celebration for K-9 Gryf 4:30-5:30 p.m. Monday, July 1, at Hughes Pavilion in Centennial Lakes Park, 7499 France Ave. S. After serving the City of Edina for six years, K-9 Gryf will retire at the end of June. Gryf and his handler, Mike Bengtson, have responded to 538 total calls for service over the years, including calls for tracking, building searches, article searches, narcotic searches and high-risk stops. The duo has earned numerous awards over the years, including: 2019: 2nd place in suspect searches, 2nd place in agility and 3rd place in criminal apprehension at the USPCA Regional Certification 2020: 1st place in the USPCA Regional Certification mini-trial 2020: Quarter 4 Narcotics Detection Case of the Quarter 2022: 2nd place in suspect search at the USPCA Regional Certification 2023: 3rd place overall at the USPCA Region 12 Narcotics Detection Certification There will be a meet and greet with Gryf to send him into retirement. If attendees are inclined to bring a gift, donations for Secondhand Hounds will be collected. Secondhand Hounds is in need of canned dog and kitten food, dog waste bags and any other dog supplies. Edina’s K-9 program is funded almost entirely by the Edina Crime Prevention Fund. Aside from training, the Crime Fund supplies all K-9 equipment, food and veterinarian bills. The department plans to get another K-9 in 2025 to fill Gryf’s spot. This event will take place rain or shine. If the weather allows, it will take place on Hughes Pavilion patio.
