The program starts Aug. 22 and runs for 13 weeks through Nov. 21. Adults ages 21 and older who work or live in Edina can register for the weekly course to get a firsthand look at how the Edina Police Department operates. Classes are held 6-9 p.m. Thursdays at the Edina Police Department, 4801 W. 50th St., or South Metro Public Safety Training Facility, 7525 Braemar Blvd. “We have a great Citizens’ Academy planned for this fall! We look forward to connecting with participants while teaching them about our daily work,” said Sgt. Anna Eckstein, who helps coordinate the program. Among other things, participants will be part of mock traffic stops, tour the Hennepin County Jail, meet one of the Edina Police K-9 teams, learn about the Metro Area Drug Task Force, learn proactive defense tactics, get a close look at Edina’s SWAT team and follow the course of a criminal investigation. About 220 students have graduated since the City began offering the program in 2010. Citizens’ Academy is sponsored by the Edina Crime Prevention Fund. Cost is $25. To register for the course, visit EdinaMN.gov/CitizensAcademy. Applicants must pass a background check. Class size is limited. Applications are accepted in the order in which they are received.
