Property owners or landlords with more than one address can purchase up to five trees. The sale preview is underway with the sale opening at noon Wednesday, Aug. 7, at bit.ly/edinatreesale. The 400 available trees are $50 each and will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The fall sale features 20 species, from fruit trees to conifers to shade trees. At pickup, which will be Oct. 5-7, most trees will be 4 to 8 feet tall, so they have a healthy start but still are easy to plant into a yard. All are climate adaptable and grow well in Minnesota. Fall is a great time to plant trees. It gives them time to establish their roots before winter sets in, and then when spring comes, they are ready for rapid growth. The sale is in partnership with Tree Trust and is part of reaching the City’s Climate Action Plan goal to increase the tree canopy from 36% to 43% by 2040. “This is a great way to get new trees in the hands of our residents at a discounted rate,” said Forester Luther Overholt. The Edina City Council approved funding for 1,000 trees to be sold in 2024, and 600 were claimed in the spring sale. Buyers can choose among these trees in the fall sale: Fruit: Evans Bali Cherry, Zestar Apple, Mount Royal Plum Small to Mid-size: Blue Beech, Techny Arborvitae Flowering: Serviceberry (multi-stem), Minnesota Redbud, Royal Raindrops Crabapple Conifer: Black Hills Spruce, Tamarack, White Pine, Eastern Red Cedar – Star Power Shade Trees: Espresso Kentucky Coffee Tree, Skyline Honeylocust, Bur Oak, Regal Prince Oak, Swamp White Oak, Hackberry, Redmond Linden, River Birch Photos and detailed descriptions of each, including size and tips on where to plant them, can be found in the sale preview at bit.ly/edinatreesale. Unsure which tree is best for your property? Email city_trees@treetrust.org and the Tree Trust’s Community Forest Department will assist you. Optional add-ons are available to protect and help establish your young tree. Include them in your tree order to pick up with your tree: Tree guard ($3) to protect young trees from rabbits, deer or rodents. Watering bag ($21) holds 20 gallons and needs to be filled only once every 5 to 7 days to provide your tree adequate water. All trees will come with planting information and a complimentary bag of mulch, courtesy of Tree Trust. The City of Edina is also providing a free bag of compost made with Edina’s own recycled food scraps. Planting trees with compost increases their survival rate by helping them to combat disease and retain water. If you’re interested in starting recycling organics at your home, request a starter kit by emailing tsingh@EdinaMN.gov. The tree sale closes at 4 p.m. Sept. 18. Purchased trees will be available for pickup 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 5, and Sunday, Oct. 6 or 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, at Rosland Park, 4300 W. 66th St. Bring your receipt. Buyers who can’t make those times can have another person pick up their trees. Volunteers will assist loading trees into cars. Most trees can fit into passenger vehicles with a little coaxing, but it’s recommended you bring a tarp or other covering to protect any seating or carpeting. The next tree sale will be in spring 2025. To learn more about the Fall Tree Sale or preview it, visit bit.ly/edinatreesale.
