Big trucks! Public Works to host open house
Edina, Minn., April 19, 2005 – Have you ever passed a City crew working and wondered how
they build a street? Are you curious about the view from inside a dump truck? Want to know the
secret behind Edina’s acclaimed snow plowing? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions,
mark your calendars for the City of Edina’s 2005 Public Works Open House.
To celebrate National Public Works Week, the City of Edina Public Works staff will show off their
equipment and discuss their job responsibilities at an open house 3 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 17.
The event will be held at the Public Works Building, 5146 Eden Ave. A display will be set up and a
representative present for each of the following areas: Park Maintenance, Utilities, Sign Shop,
Carpentry, Streets, Electric, Equipment Maintenance and Engineering. “Big trucks” and other
equipment will be set up throughout the building for children to see close-up. Parents are
encouraged to bring cameras. Hot dogs and other snacks will be served.
“Public Works and Parks professionals include those who manage water and sewer systems and
those responsible for maintaining public buildings, grounds and vehicles. In short, they are the
people who maintain and improve the systems and services vital to the community’s health, safety
and comfort,” said Steve Johnson, Public Works Coordinator for the City of Edina. “We are
planning this open house to increase public awareness of their contributions as well as to enlighten
the public about the duties, practices and goals of Public Works professionals.”
