Senior Center to exhibit lesser-known war
stories
Edina, Minn., April 6, 2005 – Through Memorial Day, the Edina Senior Center will help tell local heroes’
uncommon stories from World Wars I and II.
Of the 16 million Americans who served in World War II, 6,000 received training as glider pilots. While
they did not comprise a large portion of the enlistment, glider pilots and their planes were crucial for
transporting troops and equipment during the invasion of Europe. A display at the Senior Center, 5280
Grandview Square, will help ensure one glider pilot’s story is heard among those of the other soldiers.
War memorabilia collector Vince Cockriel recently assembled a collection of artifacts from former
World War II glider pilot Elwood Brindle. Cockriel gathered glider plane photos, goggles, logbooks and
other objects from the former Edina resident and war hero, and has placed them on display at the
Senior Center.
Women’s roles in World Wars I and II were also significant, and a second display at the Senior Center
titled, “Women at War,” illustrates how women helped during America’s struggles abroad. “Women at
War” includes posters, photos, uniforms and other artifacts from Minnesota women who served as
nurses, in administrative positions, and on the home front.
