FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
11-year-old to start July 4 parade
Edina, Minn., June 15, 2004 – Eleven-year-old Gwen Setterberg will be the “kid to start the
parade” 12:30 p.m. July 4 in Edina.
As part of the City’s fourth-annual contest, “Why I should be the kid to start the parade,” children in
Grades 1-6 were encouraged to write a short story, 50 words or less, explaining why they are best
for the unique position. Younger children submitted color drawings instead of essays.
The Parade Planning Committee carefully reviewed the essays and drawings that were submitted
and selected the winner. Gwen, the daughter of Gary and Carolyn Setterberg, recently completed
the fifth-grade at Highlands Elementary School.
Gwen’s essay, outlined with red and blue stars read, “I don’t believe that anyone could deserve the
honor of starting the Independence Day Parade, but I represent those who fought for our freedom
in the Revolutionary War. My ancestor, James Patterson II fought under George Washington in the
battle of Yorktown, after being wounded at Cowpens. As the kid to start the parade, I would honor
everyone who fought for, and won our independence.”
For more information on the contest or the parade, call Recreation Supervisor and Parade Planning
Committee staff liaison Susie Miller, 952-826-0433, or visit the parade website,
