Edina Police Department Reminds Residents of E-Bike Safety
Edina, Minn., Sept. 25, 2024 – The Edina Police Department reminds residents of the importance of biking safety. As electric bikes (e-bikes) continue to grow in popularity, more cyclists
have taken to city streets, sidewalks and trails with electric power.
Electric bikes come in three classes based on how the electric motor (up to 750 watts) assists with pedaling:
Class 1: An electric assist up to 20 mph while pedaling
Class 2: An electric assist up to 20 mph and can propel bike while not pedaling
Class 3: An electric assist up to 28 mph while pedaling
Classes 1 and 2 are mostly allowed wherever traditional bicycles are allowed. Class 2 and 3 e-bikes are not allowed on soft-surface trails in City parks, including the mountain biking
trails at Braemar Park. Pedal-assisted class 1 bikes are OK. Watch for signage on all trails and see the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website for more information.
Here are a few e-bike laws and safety reminders:
According to State law, cyclists must be 15 or older to operate an e-bike.
According to State law, cyclists must follow the rules of the road including speed limits and traffic signals. E-bikes cannot be modified to bypass the speed limit control.
Cyclists must alert pedestrians of their approach and be courteous to others sharing the sidewalks, trails and roads.
Cyclists should always wear a bike helmet and other appropriate safety gear.
E-bikes should always be stored in a cool, dry space, away from humidity and should never be stored within a fire escape route.
E-bike batteries should be properly disposed of, not thrown in the garbage or recycling.
Penalties for not following the e-bike laws and regulations can result in fines.
