Three Edina Police officers, One Sergeant Recognized for DWI Efforts
Edina, Minn., Oct. 16, 2024 – Three officers and one sergeant of the Edina Police Department were recently recognized as among the best in the state at stopping drunk driving, earning
DWI All-Star Honorable Mention recognitions from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety (DPS-OTS).
Police Officers Bennett Breyer, Travis Larson, Johnathan Rassmussen and Sgt. Mike Sussman were recognized.
“The officers of the Edina Police Department take a proactive approach to identifying and arresting individuals who are impaired and endangering the lives of others. While officers will
never be able to quantify how many lives they save by removing an impaired driver from the roads, DWI enforcement is imperative to keeping the roads safe for everyone,” said Lt. Jake
Heckert.
“These are our top enforcers. I firmly believe that every time they take one of these dangerous drivers off the street, somebody is still with their family as a result of those actions,”
said OTS Law Enforcement Liaison Bill Hammes. “I always ask the officers to ask themselves this question: who gets to go home to their family that night because of what you did?”
Between January 2023 and December 2023, Edina officers made 192 DWI-related arrests. Edina is among the top agencies within the eight-county metro area for getting impaired drivers off
the street.
“That's what this is all about, just saving lives,” said Hammes.
