HomeMy WebLinkAboutPolice and Fire Swearing In Press Release FinalContact: Kate Heimel, Communications Intern Phone 952-826-0304 • commintern2@EdinaMN.gov • EdinaMN.gov  FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE  Five Sworn into Edina Police and Fire Departments   Edina, Minn., Nov.15, 2024 – Three new Edina Police Officers and two new Paramedic/Firefighters were sworn in this week.       Officers Janely Estrada, Evan Miller and Ben Anderson took their oath to the community surrounded by family and friends Tuesday, Nov. 12. Miller and Anderson both started with the department as Cadets and were promoted to Officers in June and October, respectively. Estrada is new to the department. Miller grew up in Elk River and graduated from Hamline University in 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in criminology. His badge was pinned by his mother. Estrada grew up in Richfield and graduated from Hamline University in 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and criminology. Her badge was pinned by her father. Both Estrada and Miller completed their skills program through Hennepin County Technical College. Anderson grew up in Saint Bonifacius and graduated from Rasmussen University in 2023 with an associate degree in law enforcement. He completed his skills program through Rassmussen. His badge was pinned by his mother and father.   “I have no doubt that our new Officers have the passion, the commitment and the training required to meet challenges head on,” said Police Chief Todd Milburn.    The department also celebrated the pinning of two new Sergeants, Mike Sussman and Mike Bengtson. Sussman was promoted in August 2023 and has been with the Edina Police for nearly 11 years. His son pinned his new badge. Bengtson was promoted to Sergeant in July 2024 and has been with the Edina Police for about 10 years. His wife pinned his new badge.     Edina Fire welcomed new Paramedic/Firefighters Tommy Gonsoir and Nathan Hilliard at a pinning ceremony Friday, Nov. 15.    Gonsoir earned certifications in Firefighter I & II, HazMat Operations and EMT at Century College. He went on to work as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with North Memorial Ambulance in the metro area. He continued his studies in Paramedic School at Century College, then set his sights on the Edina Fire Departmen. Now, as a member of the Edina Fire Department, Gonsoir feels he has found the ideal place to begin his career.    Hilliard held various jobs serving other communities before coming to Edina. He started his career in Fire and Emergency Medical Services about seven years ago. He spent the first three years working in Prince George’s County in Maryland as a Firefighter/EMT. He moved back to Minnesota where he spent the next three and a half years working for Hennepin County Medical Center as a Paramedic.
