Two City Projects Receive Awards from Minnesota Chapter of the American Public Works Association
Edina, Minn., Nov. 26, 2024 – The Morningside Flood Infrastructure Project and the Blake Road Reconstruction Project received awards at the 2024 Minnesota Chapter of the American Public
Works Association Conference on Nov. 21.
The Morningside Project was co-winner in the “Environmental” category of the contest. The project reduced the flood risk for more than 150 properties in the Morningside Neighborhood,
which has several low and landlocked areas prone to flooding.
“Morningside is the oldest neighborhood in the city. It was built in a different time for a different standard, and with climate change really changing the flood risk in that neighborhood,
we had an opportunity to get in there and provide some flood risk reduction,” said Engineering Services Manager Ross Bintner.
The Blake Road project received an honorable mention in the “Transportation” category. The main benefits of this project were improved pedestrian access, pedestrian safety and traffic
operations.
“Blake Road was due for reconstruction,” said Engineering Director Chad Millner. “The streets were failing, it did not have sidewalks or bike lanes, there were underground utility needs,
and the three-way intersection caused traffic backups in the mornings and evenings.”
Both awards were presented at the conference at Mystic Lake in Prior Lake Nov. 21-22. Millner and Bintner each presented on the highlights of each project at the conference after receiving
the awards.
Due to the recognition on the state level, both now also have the opportunity to be recognized on a national level.
“We will work with the Chapter to push it forward for the national APWA awards,” said Bintner.
Additionally, at the conference, Bintner received an award from the Minnesota Chapter as Manager of the Year.
Bintner had to fit criteria in many different areas. He was recognized for the outstanding work that he does for the City of Edina and has done throughout this professional career.
