Individuals must limit their comments to three minutes. The Chair may limit the number of speakers on the same issue in the interest of time and topic. Generally speaking, items that are elsewhere on tonight's agenda may not be addressed during Community Comment. Individuals should not expect the Chair or Board/Commission Members to respond to their comments tonight. Instead, the Board/Commission might refer the matter to sta% for consideration at a future meeting. Call To Order Chair Westlund called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m. II. Roll Call Answering roll call were Commissioners Byrd, Curtin, Faeth, Fram, Scully, Steinberg, Zbaren, and Chair Westlund. Staff Present: Recreation Supervisor Laura Fulton. III. Approval Of Meeting Agenda Motion made by Curtin to approve the March 28, 2024 meeting agenda, seconded by Faeth. Motion carried. IV. Approval Of Meeting Minutes Motion made by Faeth to approve the Feb. 22, 2024 meeting minutes, seconded by Scully. Motion carried. V. New Commission members were introduced followed by round table introductions of all commission members. VI. Reports/Recommendations A. Initiative 1.1.2: Edina Art Grant Recipients ● Faeth reported that seven recipients were accepted into the grant program. ● She thanked all who helped throughout the grant process. ● She shared the variety of different art forms being represented. ● The Commission discussed further steps for the grant program. Motion made by Chair Westland to approve the action request for the Edina Art Grant. Roll call vote. Motion carried unanimously. B. 2024 Workplan Updates ● Initiative 1.1.1: Art Center i. Fulton presented the updates on the building of the Art Center. ● Initiative 1.1.2: Edina Art Grant Program i. No new comments ● Initiative 1.1.3: Review Public Art Opportunities for New City Facilities and Locations i. Chair and Member Comments • Chair Westlund reported that she had spoken to Rebecca Sorensen to discuss possible opportunities for involvement with the 50th and France Business Association. VIII. Registration is open for Summer Art Camps for kids ages 6 to 12! Have fun learning key art concepts and skills at Fred Richards Park! Each week is a different theme. 9:00 am to noon, Monday through Thursday. Art Intensives for Teens ages 12 – 17 are back this year! Sculpture Boot Camp (June 24-27) Stop Motion Animation (July 15-18) Metal Working with the WOW Mobile Metal Lab (August 12-15) Monday – Wednesday, 10 am – 3 pm, Thursday 10 am – 1 pm More Fun Spring and Summer Programs Mother’s Day Metal Casting Saturday, May 11, 10 am – 1 pm Create a small sculpture, pendant, keychain, brooch or charm through metal casting! Carve an original design - or choose from a selection of symbols and imagery- into a cuttlefish bone to create negative space for your two- piece mold. (Cuttlebone has been used since antiquity to make casts for metal because it withstands high temperatures and is easily carved.) You will fill the negative space with lead-free pewter, do finishing work with hand files/power tools and apply colored inks if desired. Choose from metal/wood/stone bases and jewelry hardware/findings. Registration is per person. No experience necessary! Parents’ Night Out Fridays, May 17, 6:00 – 9:00 pm Let date night be fun for everyone! Drop your child off at 6 pm for art activities and pizza while you head out to enjoy an evening in Edina. Join this three-session class to learn how to draw this style of person, animal or superhero! Instructor: Violet-Conchita Sunde First Saturday Art Lab Saturday, May 4, June 1, 10 am – 12 pm Join us for arty fun on Saturday mornings! Staff will be on hand to assist families with a variety of projects designed to help young people explore art concepts and mediums. This program is best for kids ages 2 to 8 with their adult(s). This is a drop-in program, but we request that you sign up for either 10 or 11 time slots. Your timing doesn't have to be exact -- we're flexible and understand families need to be, too! This no-cost program is possible thanks in part to a Youth Activities grant from Hennepin County. Printmaking Saturday, June 8, 10 am – 1 pm Design and create your own relief print using soft-cut blocks. Learn to carve your image, apply ink and print either work of art to decorate your home, or greeting cards to share with friends and loved ones (Father's Day is June 16th). This class is great for adults and teens, as well as children 8+ accompanied by an adult. Art Sampler for Kids Ages 7 – 11 Wednesdays, June 5 – July 10, 4:30 – 5:30 pm Join us for a variety of lessons you may not get in school! Pop Art sculpting, plaster gauze mask making, watercolor landscape, Wayang Indonesian puppets and acrylic Impressionism painting are topics that may be covered over this 6-week session. Story Worlds Camp for Kids Ages 9 – 12 Tue, Wed, Thurs, June 11 – 13, 1 – 4 pm Have you ever wondered how artists create their ideas for cartoons, comics, and video games? Bring your imaginary characters and worlds to life with this afternoon camp designed for kids 9 - 12 years old who love drawing and writing. Along with instructor Violet-Conchita Sunde, who specializes in cartooning and animation, you will learn how to put your own ideas together into a full-fledged story world. Use your imagination, tell stories and have a blast together! Art in the Park Ages 7-11 Tuesdays, June 11 – July 30, 9:30 – 11am, at Weber Park Wednesdays, June 12 – July 31, 9:30 – 11 am, at Cornelia Park Join us Tuesday mornings at Weber Park (4115 Grimes Ave S) or Wednesday mornings at Cornelia Park Shelter (7142 Cornelia Drive) for our Art in the Park series. STAFF REPORT Page 3 Mosaic Workshop for Teens Ages 11 – 16 Tuesday, June 18, noon – 3 pm Bring your friends and get creative as you learn about the art of mosaics! We will explore a variety of mosaic mediums and learn how to create a colorful mosaic using glass, tiles, beads, and other found objects. Discover the processes and techniques used in creating and grouting mosaics to bring home a completed work of art. Teen Art Intensive: Sculpture Boot Camp Monday-Thursday, June 24-27, 10 am – 3 pm (1 pm on Thursday) If you like to build things, this camp is for you! Explore big ideas in sculpture such as relief, kinetic, environmental, in-the-round and more. Experience different processes, including modeling clay, assemblage, paper mâché, natural earth materials and mobiles. Summer Art Intensives are designed so that teens aged 12-17 can spend a week exploring an art experience in depth. Teen Art Intensive: Stop Motion Animation Monday-Thursday, July 15-18, 10 am – 3 pm (1 pm on Thursday) Let's make a stop motion animation movie! Have a blast creating characters out of modeling clay, telling their stories, and putting it all together in a video. Summer Art Intensives are designed so that teens aged 12-17 can spend a week exploring an art experience in depth. Canvas Fun: Smiley Sloth! Friday, July 19, 10 – 11 am Grab your friend and join us for a fun painting workshop. Everyone will get their own 11x14 stretched canvas to paint a cute, cuddly, smiley sloth. Beginning Abstract Painting Mondays, June 3 – 17, 5:30 – 7:30 Get started with abstract painting in this three-session class. You will learn to select and mix a personal palette, explore mark making with various tools, learn how to work in layers and deepen your understanding of contrast and composition. No need to bring anything, just wear your painting clothes! Realistic Painting Studio Mondays, June 3 – July 15, 1 – 4 pm If you have had a little (or a lot!) of painting experience, join us for a studio-style class with instructor Louise Gillis. Your instructor provides lessons and coaching as you work with flowers or still life, or paint from photos. Drawing Portraits from Photos – Studio Tuesdays, June 4 – July 16, 1 – 4 pm Join us for focused study and guidance with award-winning artist instructor and coach Louise Gillis. All levels welcome. Class held at the Edina Senior Center. STAFF REPORT Page 4 Drawing Portraits for Beginners Tuesdays, June 5 – July 16, 6 – 7:30 pm Learn to draw a portrait with instructor Mike Bedard. Please bring a sketchbook and good quality drawing pencils and eraser. Also, plan to bring an 8.5 x 11 black & white photocopy of the portrait you want to draw. You may want to bring more than one portrait -- your instructor can help you decide which will be the best to start with. High contrasts between light and shadow can be nice when you are starting out. The Secret Life of Color Fridays, June 7 – July 19, 12 – 2 pm Using the Hauschka intuitive watercolor painting process, this beginning class will cover exercises to explore the nature of each color and color mixing. This method of painting is a gentle introduction to the creative process. It invites us to open to our unconscious and, through the process, allow an image to emerge. Alcohol Inks: Basics & Beyond Mondays, June 10 – 24, 6 – 8 pm Dive into the world of Alcohol Inks in this three-week workshop series. We will learn about these pigment- intense and vibrant, free-flowing inks and experiment with designs on a variety of surfaces. Make abstract compositions, flowers, landscapes, use stencils and more. You will leave the workshop with knowledge of new techniques that you can then take home and expand your artistic interest. No experience needed and no need to bring anything! Curated Conversations Third Wednesday of each month, 1 – 2:30 pm Arneson Acres Park Terrace Room Join us in exploring works of art in the Minneapolis Institute of Art’s (Mia) collection and beyond. Whether you’re new to art or have a degree in art history, bring your knowledge and perspectives to these engaging discussions. Each session will focus on a theme presented in a Power Point format; discussion and conversation encouraged! Beginning Drawing - Foundations July 24- Aug. 28, 5:30-7:30 pm In this intro course students will practice the basic principles of observational drawing, learn to use materials and gain confidence in their skills and they embark on a journey to create an expressive portrait. Each week students will incorporate new ideas and concepts into an illustration to build their skill, confidence and creativity. Ages Beginning Watercolor Painting – Afternoon Wednesdays, Aug. 14-28, 2-4 p.m. Learn basic concepts of design, value and color theory. Learn and practice various watercolor techniques and use them in creating simple compositions in this three-week class. This class is appropriate for people who are brand-new to watercolor painting or have had some experience. Beginning Watercolor Painting - Evening Tuesdays, Aug. 13-27 5:30-7:30 pm Learn basic concepts of design, value and color theory. Learn and practice various watercolor techniques and use them in creating simple compositions in this three-week class. This class is appropriate for people who are brand-new to watercolor painting or have had some experience. More opportunities for ART!
