I. Call To Order
Chair Westlund called the meeting to order at 4:31 p.m.
II. Roll Call
Answering roll call were Commissioners Byrd, Curtin, Faeth, Scully, Steinberg, Stemmler, Student
Commissioner Li, Zbaren, and Chair Westlund.
Staff Present: Recreation Supervisor, Laura Fulton.
III. Approval Of Meeting Agenda
Motion made by Faeth to approve the April 25, 2024 meeting agenda, seconded by
Curtin. Motion carried.
IV. Approval Of Meeting Minutes
Motion made by Faeth to approve the March 28, 2024 meeting minutes, seconded by
Zbaren. Motion carried.
V. Reports/Recommendations
A. 2024 Workplan Updates
● Initiative 1.1.1: Art Center
i. Fulton presented the updates on the Art Center's progress.
● Initiative 1.1.2: Edina Art Grant Program
i. Faeth presented the Edina Art Fair project. She updated the commission on the
details of the fair project.
ii. Faeth and Fulton informed on Fram’s mentees and their progress.
iii. Byrd informed on Donte’s project.
iv. Curtin reported on Fiesta Latina happening on Cinco De Mayo. She also shared
details about the recipient.
v. Curtin reported on EAAA. She gave more details about the day of the event.
vi. Fulton assisted in organizing a

event. He also discussed possible contingency plans for bad weather.

Summer Camps for Kids Ages 6-12
Story Worlds Camp for Kids Ages 9 - 12
Art Center, 4701 West 64th Street
Tue - Thurs, June 11 – 13, 1 – 4 pm, $125
Have you ever wondered how artists create their ideas for cartoons, comics, and video games?
Bring your imaginary characters and worlds to life with this afternoon camp designed for kids 9 - 12
years old who love drawing and writing. Along with instructor Violet-Conchita Sunde, who
specializes in cartooning and animation, you will learn how to put your own ideas together into a
full-fledged story world. Use your imagination, tell stories and have a blast together!
SUMMER ART CAMP: Weekly themes below

For Kids 6 – 12
Monday – Thursday, 9 am – noon, $175
Making Art With Van Gogh
June 10-14. Learn to use color, expression and brushwork like Vincent Van Gogh – he only sold one
painting during his lifetime but is now among the best-known artists for his vivid self-portraits,
colorful paintings of flowers, and landscapes such as Starry Night. Draw and paint with acrylics and
collage with colored paper to explore forms, perspective and design.
The Art of Interior Designs
June 17-20. Artists bring a sense of design, color, texture and patterns to indoor spaces. Campers
will design walls, furniture and décor to create fun rooms! What will be your idea for an awesome

video game room, a bedroom, a reception hall in a castle or a treehouse? Storyboard your
ideas, learn about perspective, explore collage, and build a 3D model.
Making Art with Matisse
June 24-27. Learn to use color, patterns and shapes like Henri Matisse – they called him a “wild
beast” (fauve) because his colors were so expressive! Draw and paint with acrylics and collage with
colored paper to explore forms, perspective and design.
Cartooning and Graphic Novels (Full – Waitlist)
July 8-11. If you love to draw, paint and tell stories, you’ll love building your cartooning skills and
working on a graphic novel! Campers will create characters, story-board ideas, and finish by
making graphic novels complete with block-printed covers and traditional binding.
Art and Nature
July 15-18. This camp focuses on beauty and diversity of nature. Campers will use natural materials
to create one-of-a-kind works of art, from pinecone critters to botanical illustration and landscape
paintings.
The Art of Architecture: Exteriors
July 22-25. This camp was a blast last year! Artists help make buildings, neighborhoods and cities
great. Through ideas about architecture and design, perspective and color, campers will have fun
drawing, painting and sculpting - culminating in an entire collaboratively-built city!
All About Sculpture
July 29 - Aug 1. Explore and build all kinds of sculpture! Working with air-dry clay, paper mâché,
cardboard and found materials, make mobiles, fantasy creatures and more. Have fun learning
principles of balance and strength as you create unique 3D artwork.
Rainforest Adventures
August 5-8. Rainforests are colorful and full of wonderful shapes, lines and textures. Campers will
love exploring rainforest habitats and ecosystems while finding artistic inspiration in the animals
and plants of the rainforest.
Myths and Legends (Full – Waitlist)
August 12-15. Explore the art of myth and legends as we make some magic together! With famous
Greek myths as inspiration, we will create our own dragons, beasts, flying horses - using your
imagination to tell epic stories. Exchange your sword for a paintbrush, try your hand at printmaking
and create 3D sculptures and more!
Summer Art for Teens
Teens 16+ are always welcome to join adult classes! Need-based scholarships are available through the
Edina Connect Card.

Mosaic Workshop for Teens
Tuesday, June 18, noon – 3 pm
Bring your friends and get creative as you learn about the art of mosaics! We will explore a variety
of mosaic mediums and learn how to create a colorful mosaic using glass, tiles, beads, and other
found objects. Discover the processes and techniques used in creating and grouting mosaics to
bring home a completed work of art. $59
Summer Art Intensives
Summer Art Intensives are designed so that teens aged 12-17 can spend a week exploring an art
experience in depth.
Mon - Thurs, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (1 p.m. on Thurs.), $250
Sculpture Boot Camp
June 24-27. If you like to build things, this camp is for you! Explore big ideas in sculpture such as
relief, kinetic, environmental, in-the-round and more. Experience different processes, including
modeling clay, assemblage, paper mâché, natural earth materials and mobiles.
Stop-Motion Animation Camp
July 15 - 18. Let's make a stop motion animation movie! Have a blast creating characters out of
modeling clay, telling their stories, and putting it all together in a video.
Metal Working with the WOW Mobile Metal Lab
August 12 - 15. The WOW team takes each artist through the entire process of casting metal – from
safety gear to surface treatments – and demonstrates just how accessible this ancient process can
be. It’s hands-on, interactive, exciting, empowering, collaborative work.
Summer Youth and Family Classes and Activities
Art: Try it Out! for Preschoolers
Every Friday, 10:30 – 11:30 am, $16
Every Friday morning! Use a variety of art materials and techniques, including drawing, painting, sculpture
and collage to create unique projects! Must be accompanied by a caregiver. Come when you can, week by
week registration. For kids ages 2 – 6.
Art in the Park
Every Tuesday at Weber Park, June 11 – July 30, 9:30 – 11 am, $15
Every Wednesday at Cornelia Park, June 12 – July 31, 9:30 – 11 am, $15
Join us Tuesday mornings at Weber Park (4115 Grimes Ave S) or Wednesday mornings at Cornelia
Park Shelter (7142 Cornelia Drive) for our Art in the Park series. Sign up for one or sign up for all!
Staff will share their expertise in the project areas to make this a fun, interactive experience for
your child!

First Saturday Art Lab
June 1 and August 3, 10 am – noon, Free
Join us for arty fun on Saturday mornings! Staff will be on hand to assist families with a variety of projects
designed to help young people explore art concepts and mediums. This program is best for kids ages 2 to 8
with their adult(s).
Art Sampler for Kids Ages 7 – 11
Wednesdays, June 5 – July 10, 4:30 – 5:30 pm, $65
Join us for a variety of lessons you may not get in school! Pop Art sculpting, plaster gauze mask making,
watercolor landscape, Wayang Indonesian puppets and acrylic Impressionism painting are topics that will be
covered over this 6-week session. Instructor: Mike Bedard.
Printmaking
Saturday, June 8, 10 am – 1 pm, $55
Design and create your own relief print using soft-cut blocks. Learn to carve your image, apply ink and print
either work of art to decorate your home, or greeting cards to share with friends and loved ones (Father's
Day is June 16th). This class is great for adults and teens, as well as children 8+ accompanied by an adult.

Canvas Fun: Pet Portrait Painting

Dog, cat, hamster or horse - no matter your favorite animal, paint a portrait of your furry friend! Once you
sign up, email a photo. We will sketch it on canvas then walk you through the steps to creating your final
masterpiece on an 11x14 canvas! For kids, with or without their adult (registration is per person).
Summer Classes for Adults and Teens
*NEW* Digital Illustration with ProCreate
Tuesdays, July 23 – August 6, 5:30 – 7:30 pm
Learn how to use different tools and techniques, including digital painting basics and workflow tips
to make the most of procreate for your creative project. Each week students will incorporate new
ideas and concepts into an illustration to build their skill, confidence and creativity. Building on
color theory, learn how to use shape and color to communicate emotions and ideas. Create a
subject or character to star in their illustrations, then learn to use background to make you finial
composition look great! Students need their own tablet loaded with the Procreate app and Apple
Pencil. Instructor: Jordyn Myhran. $75
Painting Classes
Beginning Oil Painting
Wednesdays, June 5 – July 17, 5:30 – 8 pm
Working with oil paints is simpler than you might think! Join us to explore classic medium in a fun
and supportive environment in this six-week class. As with most traditional oil painting techniques,
you will begin by sketching your subject (a simple still life) onto your canvas. Move on to learn color
mixing, shading and brushstroke techniques, layering and other basic skills of applying paint to your
canvas. Instructor: Rachel Madden. $175
Realistic Painting – Studio
Mondays, June 3 – July 15, 1 – 4 pm
Mondays, July 22 – August 26, 1 – 4 pm
If you have had a little (or a lot!) of painting experience, join us for a studio-style class with
instructor Louise Gillis. Your instructor provides lessons and coaching as you work with flowers or
still life, or paint from photos. Use the medium you prefer (oil, acrylic, watercolor) or try something

Beginning Watercolor Painting
Tuesdays, August 13 – 27, 5:30 – 7:30
Wednesdays, August 14 – 28, 2 – 4 pm
Learn basic concepts of design, value and color theory. Learn and practice various watercolor
techniques and use them in creating simple compositions in this three-week class. This class is

Beginning Abstract Painting
Thursdays, June 6 – 20, 5:30 – 7:30 pm
Get started with abstract painting in this three-session class. You will learn to select and mix a
personal palette, explore mark making with various tools, learn how to work in layers and deepen
your understanding of contrast and composition. No need to bring anything, just wear your
painting clothes! Instructor: Lockie Chapman. $75
Beginning Abstract Painting – Level 2

If you have tried Beginning Abstract and want to continue to advance your skills with directed practice and
exercises, join us for this 3-week class. Experiment with different tools and methods as you work to develop your

Intermediate Abstract Painting

For students who have taken the Beginning Abstract Series, and are ready to take your work to the
next level in this six-week class. Continue to work on developing your own personal expression in a
supportive community. Learn tools to move past creative blocks and evolve your expression in

Drawing Classes
Drawing Portraits for Beginners
Wednesdays, June 5 – July 16, 6 – 7:30 pm
Learn to draw a portrait with instructor Mike Bedard. Please bring a sketchbook and good quality
drawing pencils and eraser. Also, plan to bring an 8.5 x 11 black & white photocopy of the
portrait you want to draw. You may want to bring more than one portrait -- your
instructor can help you decide which will be the best to start with. Instructor: Mike Bedard. $84
Beginning Drawing – Foundations!
Wednesdays, July 24 – August 28, 5:30 – 7:30
Have you ever wished you could draw? Having you been drawing for years and want to improve
your basic skills? Whatever your drawing level, this course is for you! Practice the basic principles of
observational drawing, learn to use materials creatively, and gain confidence in your skills as you

No experience needed! Dive into the world of Alcohol Inks in this three-session workshop series.
We will learn about these pigment-intense and vibrant, free-flowing inks and experiment with
designs on a variety of surfaces. Make abstract compositions, flowers, landscapes, use stencils and
more. You will leave the workshop with knowledge of new techniques that you can then take home
and expand your artistic interest. $157

Curated Conversations
Wednesday, June 19, 1 – 2:30
Each third Wednesday of the month, join us in exploring works of art in the Minneapolis Institute of
Art’s collection and beyond. Whether you’re new to art or have a degree in art history, bring your
knowledge and perspectives to these engaging discussions. Discussion and conversation
encouraged! June’s theme is Asian Arts at Mia. This group meets at Arneson Acres Park. Free.
Acrylic Pour Painting – Beach Wave!

Join us for a fun evening learning how to create beautiful fluid art. Instead of paint brushes, we will
different techniques - even gravity! - to create two ocean-inspired pours. It's a lot of fun and a
great way to spark your creative energy. You will create two 8"x8" canvases and transport them
home in a provided tray. $50
Paper Marbling
Saturday, August 10, 10 am – 1 pm
Learn to marble paper in the traditional way, by floating water-based paints onto a liquid surface
and lifting these images. Participants will have the opportunity to make decorative papers for book
covers, bookmarks, cards and other crafts. An elegant way to decorate paper for calligraphy,
bookbinding, collage, and stationery, this hydro-printing process has been around for centuries.

Try it: Glass Mosaic Coasters
Thursday, August 15, 6:30 – 8 pm
Join us to create two glass coasters in this introduction to glass mosaics! In this class, you will first
create a design with guidance from your instructor, then you'll learn how to us glass nippers to cut
glass to fit your design. After gluing the mosaic pieces down, you'll grout your mosaics in class so
your handmade project will be ready to take home with you. This is a fun class for anyone that
would like to learn to work with mosaics and glass. $35

Open Studio runs every Wednesday and Friday from noon to 4 pm. $5 drop in sessions available or
register online. Space available for those who want to draw, paint and create together.
