Individuals must limit their comments to three minutes. The Chair may limit the number of speakers on the same issue in the interest of time and topic. Generally speaking, items that are elsewhere on tonight's agenda may not be addressed during Community Comment. Individuals should not expect the Chair or Board/Commission Members to respond to their comments tonight. Instead, the Board/Commission might refer the matter to sta% for consideration at a future meeting. Call To Order Chair Westlund called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m. II. Roll Call Answering roll call were Commissioners Byrd, Curtin, Fram, Scully, Steinberg and Chair Westlund. Staff Present: Recreation Supervisor Laura Fulton. Zbaren arrived at 4:37, Stemmler arrived at 4:42 III. Approval Of Meeting Agenda Motion made by Fram to approve the June 27, 2024 meeting agenda, seconded by Curtin. Motion carried. IV. Approval Of Meeting Minutes Motion made by Curtin to approve the May 23, 2024 meeting minutes, seconded by Steinberg. Motion carried. V. Special Recognition A. Presentation from Arts Grant Recipient Donte Mearon. Mr. Mearon reviewed the use of the grant money for his project. He also reported on how his booth at the Edina Art Festival went. He thanked the Commission for the grant opportunity. He also discussed how he discovered the grant program. VI. Reports/Recommendations A. 2024 Workplan Updates ● Initiative 1.1.1: Art Center i. Fulton noted that there are no new updates on the Art Center. ● Initiative 1.1.2: Edina Art Grant Program i. Scully reported the details of the Cochello event. ii. Stemmler reported about the student involvement at the Nolan Mains concert. Westlund discussed Rebecca Sorenson will discuss certain opportunities in the future. The Commission discussed the parking garages and other City spaces that could be used for public art at 50th and France. ● Initiative 1.1.4: Commission Participation in Community Events i. Stemmler discussed the Commission's involvement in the 4th of July parade. ii. Fram discussed what the Commission will need to do as a part of the parade. iii. The Commission discussed the logistics of the parade lineup and the possibility of doing something special for the parade. iv. Scully discussed the possibility of having a drummer to lead them in a march during the parade. VII. Chair And Member Comments • Chair Westlund reported that she went to the Edina Theater film showing on Junteenth. VIII. Staff Comments ● Fulton reported and recommended that the Commission moves the September meeting up a week due to scheduling conflicts. ● Commission discussed and voted on the date change for the Sept. meeting. September meeting will now be held on September 19, 2024 ● Fulton reported that the Art Center has received a grant for the continuation of the Art Lab program for youth. Initiative 1.1.1 Art Center As the Hennepin County Southdale Library project advances, the Arts and Culture Commission will continue to bring the community perspective and assist as the city moves forward as a tenant for a new art center design. Assist with community perspective on design and engagement.Hennepin County and EAC are working through the schematic design process for the new facility. As this progresses, more information will become available. Review and select art application projects to be implemented. Many of the artists who were awarded Art Grants have successfully completed their projects. 1. $1,000 for the Edina Art Fair to launch an Emerging Artists Program (Completed and has submitted feedback) 2. $500 for the 50th & France Summer Concert Series for local student performances (Ongoing) 3. $500 for Donte Mearon to host an interactive demonstration of printmaking at the Edina Art Festival Kids Zone and create a community cloth (Completed and has presented the community cloth to the Arts and Culture Commission 4. $500 for Chris Kalogerson to commission a musical and cultural Fiesta Latina performance at the Edina Public Library (Completed and has submitted feedback) 5. $1,000 for production recording of Coacello: A multigenerational, multigenre, multicultural celebration of music at Centennial Lakes Park (Completed) 6. $1,000 for the Edina Asian American Alliance for visual, performing, and literary arts at the AAPI event at Rosland Park (Completed and has submitted feedback) 7. $500 for Lin (Lindsey) Wu for choreographed art of a Tea Ceremony (Tea Culture Art) at Edina Community Center, Southdale Center, Edina Senior Center and/or art festivals (In Process) Faeth, Curtin, Fram, Byrd, Li Initiative 1.1.3 Review Public Art Opportunities for New City Facilities and Locations As the City builds out Grandview, Fire Station #2, Fred Richards Park and other projects, the Arts and Culture Commission will review art and décor elements and make public art recommendations. Review and recommend public art projects to be implemented. ACC members of this initiative have met with sta regarding a new public art project tentatively being planned for the Community Health building that is under construction. As this moves forward, commission members will receive more information. Fram, Faeth, Scully, Stemmler, Benarouch, Li Initiative 1.1.4 Commission Participation in Community Events Promote Commission initiatives and art in Edina through increased ACC presence at up to two public events, including Edina Fall into the Arts Festival at Centennial Lakes Park or other City events though out the year. ACC members successfully participated in Edina's July 4th Parade. Planning has begun for the Edina Fall into the Arts booth. Explore and build all kinds of sculpture! Working with air-dry clay, paper mâché, cardboard and found materials, make mobiles, fantasy creatures and more. Have fun learning principles of balance and strength as you create unique 3D artwork. Rainforest Adventures August 5-8. Rainforests are colorful and full of wonderful shapes, lines and textures. Campers will love exploring rainforest habitats and ecosystems while finding artistic inspiration in the animals and plants of the rainforest. Myths and Legends (Full – Waitlist) August 12-15. Explore the art of myth and legends as we make some magic together! With famous Greek myths as inspiration, we will create our own dragons, beasts, flying horses - using your imagination to tell epic stories. STAFF REPORT Page 2 Metal Working with the WOW Mobile Metal Lab August 12 – 15, Mon - Thurs, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. $250 The WOW team takes each artist through the entire process of casting metal – from safety gear to surface treatments – and demonstrates just how accessible this ancient process can be. It’s hands- on, interactive, exciting, empowering, collaborative work. Summer Art Intensives are designed so that teens aged 12-17 can spend a week exploring an art experience in depth. Summer Youth and Family Classes and Activities Art Together Wednesday, August 14 5-7 p.m. Join Edina Police, Edina Fire and other public safety partners for an art project, snacks and community fun! Family fun for everyone! Art: Try it Out! for Preschoolers Every Friday, 10:30 – 11:30 am, $16 Every Friday morning! Use a variety of art materials and techniques, including drawing, painting, sculpture and collage to create unique projects! Must be accompanied by a caregiver. Come when you can, week by week registration. For kids ages 2 – 6. First Saturday Art Lab August 3, 10 am – noon, Free Join us for arty fun on Saturday mornings! Canvas Fun: Pet Portrait Painting Monday, August 5, 5 – 7 pm, $45 Dog, cat, hamster or horse - no matter your favorite animal, paint a portrait of your furry friend! Once you sign up, email a photo. We will sketch it on canvas then walk you through the steps to creating your final masterpiece on an 11x14 canvas! For kids, with or without their adult (registration is per person). Summer Classes for Adults and Teens *NEW* Digital Illustration with ProCreate Tuesdays, July 23 – August 6, 5:30 – 7:30 pm Learn how to use different tools and techniques, including digital painting basics and workflow tips to make the most of procreate for your creative project. Each week students will incorporate new ideas and concepts into an illustration to build their skill, confidence and creativity. Building on color theory, learn how to use shape and color to communicate emotions and ideas. Your instructor provides lessons and coaching as you work with flowers or still life, or paint from photos. Use the medium you prefer (oil, acrylic, watercolor) or try something new. Instructor: Louise Gillis. $150 Beginning Watercolor Painting Tuesdays, August 13 – 27, 5:30 – 7:30 Wednesdays, August 14 – 28, 2 – 4 pm Learn basic concepts of design, value and color theory. Paper Marbling Saturday, August 10, 10 am – 1 pm Learn to marble paper in the traditional way, by floating water-based paints onto a liquid surface and lifting these images. Participants will have the opportunity to make decorative papers for book covers, bookmarks, cards and other crafts. An elegant way to decorate paper for calligraphy, bookbinding, collage, and stationery, this hydro-printing process has been around for centuries. $55 Try it: Glass Mosaic Coasters Thursday, August 15, 6:30 – 8 pm Join us to create two glass coasters in this introduction to glass mosaics! In this class, you will first create a design with guidance from your instructor, then you'll learn how to us glass nippers to cut glass to fit your design. After gluing the mosaic pieces down, you'll grout your mosaics in class so your handmade project will be ready to take home with you. This is a fun class for anyone that would like to learn to work with mosaics and glass. $35 More opportunities for ART!
