HomeMy WebLinkAboutEditionEdina_April-2025-Web-241 Years of Horticulture: Tim Zimmerman ‘Plants’ a Legacy
City’s Longtime Horticulturist Retired in Late March
BY JACEY MISMASH
One of Horticulturist Tim Zimmerman’s
greatest projects, the City of Edina’s
greenhouse complex, sits at the northwest
corner of Arneson Acres Park. At any given
time, the building’s two greenhouses
can house up to 20,000 plants of various
species. In addition to the greenhouses,
the building includes space for seeding
and transplanting, storage, meetings
and a garage for park equipment.
However, when Zimmerman first started with
the City in 1984, the greenhouse building as
it stands today was nothing more than an
idea. At only 22 years old, his approach to
horticulture was quite simple: “How much
can I do?”
The answer: A whole lot.
Prior to being hired as a Horticulturist,
Zimmerman worked for three summers as
a seasonal employee for Three Rivers Park
District. When he entered into a full-time
position with the City of Edina, he was
immediately interested in building a new
greenhouse at Arneson Acres Park,
4711 W. 70th St.
Following the building’s completion in 1991,
Zimmerman continued to breathe life into
the space. Every drawer, bin and basket were
meticulously labeled and the fridge in the
meeting room often held more seeds than
food. A piece of painter’s tape above the
office space reads “Timmy’s Home,” with
a small, hand-drawn heart to the right of
it. Though the design and planning of the
greenhouse building was one of Zimmerman’s
earlier projects, his impact resonates
throughout Arneson Acres and across the city.
In the first few years of his career at Edina,
Zimmerman was involved in the large-scale
cleanup of buckthorn on the west side of
the formal gardens at Arneson Acres and
the design and planning of gardens across
the park.
Zimmerman’s work continued throughout
the ‘90s when he was involved in various
Arneson Acres projects. Swamp White Oak
and Pecan trees were added to the south
side of the park, the spring Memory Garden
(which was later redone as a full-season
Tranquility Garden) and a new Hosta Garden
in the west. Zimmerman also helped at other
parks in the city, including the installation of
the Veterans Memorial Garden at Utley Park,
4521 W. 50th St.
“He is always one of the busiest employees
in the Park Maintenance Division,” said Park
Maintenance Supervisor Brian Driste. “Tim’s
ability to handle many different issues and
problems while completing his normal work
duties sets him aside from others.”
Zimmerman’s dedication as the City’s
Horticulturist wasn’t only limited to park
upkeep and maintenance, but to bringing
new varieties of plants to Edina— especially
ones that are atypical to Minnesota.
City Forester Luther Overholt worked with
Zimmerman on various tree-related projects.
Most recently, they introduced American
Chestnut trees to Edina. The attention to
detail needed to successfully propagate these
trees in Minnesota was right up Zimmerman’s
alley. They also grew three Bristlecone Pine
trees in the park, a species of tree that can
live to be over 1,500 years old.
“All the stuff that we do will be here longer
than us, Tim always instilled that,” said
Overholt. “The diversity of plants that we
have is completely unique to Edina — in fact,
some people come to Arneson just for that.”
Zimmerman was also a driving force in
Edina’s acquisition of Midwest-grown
Asiatic Lilies, many of which can be found
in the North Star Lily Society’s “Minnesota
Hybridizers’ Lily Garden” found at Arneson
Acres. Zimmerman donated many of his own
hybridized lilies, 10 of which are registered
with the Royal Horticultural Society in the
United Kingdom. As a result of his hard work,
Edina is now home to the largest collection of
Asiatic Lilies in Minnesota.
After 41 years, March 31 was Zimmerman’s
last day with Edina. Connor Clifford has
been hired as a Public Service Worker in
the Park Maintenance Division to take over
Zimmerman’s duties.
Looking forward, Zimmerman plans to fish,
travel and spend quality time with his family.
In typical “Tim” fashion, he plans to devote
a portion of his time to volunteering with
different organizations, including helping
with Edina’s future landscape projects.
“I feel like I fulfilled my purpose in life with
the City of Edina,” Zimmerman said in his
final days on the job.
Tim Zimmerman has propagated many Asiatic lilies,
including “Inspiring Joan,” named after late Edina
Garden Club member Joan Scott. (Submitted Photo)

The approval process for the new
43,107-square-foot Southdale Library is
underway. If plans are approved and a final
agreement reached, the Edina Art Center will
be a tenant within the library and will have
16,164 square feet of space.
“Southdale Library’s history is also very much
its future,” said Hennepin County Library
Director Scott Duimstra. “We’re excited for
all Hennepin County residents to benefit
from this generational investment in learning,
literacy and enrichment.”
The existing building at 7001 York Ave. would
be razed, and the new building will be built
closer to the intersection of York Avenue and
70th Street. The proposed building design
aims to be respectful of the surrounding area,
particularly the scale of single-family housing
along Xerxes Avenue since the parcel borders
a residential neighborhood in Richfield.
The clerestory pop-up is set back an
additional 25 feet at the center of the façade
to create the appearance of a smaller-scale
structure at the building perimeter. The
upper wall of windows would also provide
daylight deep into the building, including
the Art Center studios. This indirect daylight
is intended to improve class experiences,
occupant health and overall comfort while
vastly reducing reliance on artificial light.
The Edina Art Center would be located on
the upper level. Plans include clay wheel
rooms, a hand-building space, a glaze room,
and electric indoor and gas outdoor kilns.
There would also be a maker’s space, large
art creation studios, a gallery and a gift
shop. The maker’s space would be focused
on technology-based art and tools to help
students create art in the digital world.
“Technology is on the forefront of art
creation,” said Recreation Supervisor Laura
Fulton. “We hope to offer new classes on art
software so people can learn graphic design,
architecture design and software that help
artists draw and paint.”
The Southdale Library site’s proposed design
is transformative by restoring ecological
function and natural beauty to a substantially
paved 7.73-acre parcel. The proposed design
regrades the site to enhance pedestrian and
cycling connections from all four corners and
provides multiple outdoor programming areas

BY DEBBIE TOWNSEND
Braemar Golf Course has been chosen to
host the inaugural Minnesota Adaptive
Open, a championship for those with
intellectual, neurological, sensory or
physical impairments.
Some of the top adaptive golfers in the
country – and possibly beyond – are
expected to play Sept. 26-28. A scratch
golfer from Florida already registered,
and many of the competitors shoot at or
around par. They just might use special
equipment or have a modified swing to
do it.
“These golfers are extremely talented,”
said Nathan Lindberg, who handles
adaptive golf programs for the Minnesota
Golf Association (MGA) that is organizing
the event. Some were born with
disabilities and found golf could adapt
to them. Others were excellent golfers
before an injury or medical condition,
yet they’ve adapted to continue playing
the game they love.
The MGA approached Braemar, 6364
John Harris Drive, about serving as the
inaugural host due to Braemar’s longtime
commitment to adaptive golfers. The
City hosts adaptive golf classes, Special
Olympics golfers and for decades has
partnered with the Courage Kenny
Rehabilitation Institute (formerly Sister
Kenny) on an adaptive golf league.
“Braemar was all on board and excited.
They weren’t just willing to host. They
wanted to host,” said Joel Comstock,
MGA Strategic Partnerships & Community
Relations Director. “The golf course itself
is a great golf course for a championship-
style event.”
No changes will be needed on the
Championship 18 course. When the Richard
Mandell-redesigned course opened in
2019, it included ADA-accessible areas and
features welcoming golfers of all abilities.
Friday, Sept. 26, will include a free
adaptive golf clinic open to the
community. Other special events
and guests will be announced.
“We are going to try to make it as big of
an event as we can,” said Braemar Golf
Course General Manager Joe Abood.
Edina residents are encouraged to come
out and watch the golfers compete over
the weekend, with tee times starting at
8 a.m. Sept. 27 and 28.
Braemar Golf Course also hosted
the Minnesota PGA Professional
Championship and the Minnesota
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
Men’s Golf Championship in 2024.
“These organizations want to have their
biggest championships here,” Abood said.
“It shows the City’s investments in the golf
course are paying dividends. This is a place
that golfers want to be in Minnesota.”

Volunteers Needed
A championship tournament relies on
volunteers. They are needed to help with
a variety of tasks, from spotting balls to
shuttling players around the facility to
assisting the athletes.
“There are going to be lots of different
opportunities. You don’t have to be a golf
expert to come out and help,” said Braemar
Golf Course General Manager Joe Abood.
Interested people are asked to fill
out the Volunteer Inquiry Form at

City Offers Free Home
Energy Squad Visits in April
Advisors Help Residents Identify Ways
to Save Energy and Reduce Utility Bills
Edina residents can schedule free Home Energy Squad visits in April.
Home Energy Squad, provided by Xcel Energy and CenterPoint
Energy and delivered by the Center for Energy and Environment,
helps homeowners and renters in buildings with four or fewer
units identify ways to save energy with a personalized home
assessment. They will install energy-saving materials and inspect
insulation, heating and cooling systems and the water heater.
Materials they might install include LED lightbulbs, door and attic
hatch weather stripping, programmable or smart thermostat
or high-efficiency water fixtures. After a visit, a participant will
receive a customized home energy report and support from
energy advisors on how to move forward with energy upgrades.
The cost for a Home Energy Squad visit is typically reduced to $50
for Edina residents, but visits scheduled in April will be free as part
of work toward completing goals of the City’s Climate Action Plan.
For more information or to schedule the Home Energy Squad,
visit mncee.org/HES.
