FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Spring Hydrant Flushing Begins April 14
Edina, Minn., April 8, 2025 – Starting Monday, April 14, the City of Edina’s Public Works Department will begin its spring hydrant flushing program. Flushing will continue around the
city for approximately three to four weeks.
Spring hydrant flushing is necessary to clean the watermains after the lower water demands of winter and to minimize the amount of naturally occurring minerals, like iron and manganese,
into homes during the high-demand summer season. It also allows the Utilities Division to identify hydrants in need of maintenance.
“Hydrant flushing is done to help bring ‘new’ water throughout the distribution system, helping scour any sediments that have settled out within the pipes in lower flow areas. It also
allows operators to inspect the hydrant, perform annual maintenance and schedule repairs as needed,” said Assistant Public Works Director Dave Goergen.
If the water is discolored when you turn on your tap, simply run it until it is clear. If you encounter red or brown staining on your clothing while doing laundry, do not dry. Instead,
contact Public Works for a free iron-removing product and then rewash.
If you have any questions or concerns about the program, call the Utilities Division of Public Works at 952-826-0375.
