Vernon Avenue & Highway 100 Interchange Project Begins April 21
Road Closures Begin April 23; Expect Traffic Changes Through Mid-November
Edina, Minn., April 18, 2025 – The Vernon Avenue & Highway 100 Interchange Project, a joint effort between the City of Edina, Hennepin County and the Minnesota Department of Transportation,
will begin the week of April 21, with closures beginning April 23. Construction is expected to be completed by mid-November 2025.
This $28.2 million project will improve safety and mobility throughout the Grandview District by upgrading roads, bridges and pedestrian infrastructure. This includes replacing two bridges
on Vernon Avenue, one over the Canadian Pacific Kansas City railroad and the second over Minnesota Highway 100.
The Vernon Avenue Bridge will be widened and raised to meet federal railroad clearance requirements, while the new Highway 100 Bridge will provide space for pedestrian and traffic improvements.
The project will also improve nearby intersections and eliminate redundant Highway 100 access ramps in favor of a standard tight diamond interchange, including the removal of the northbound
on- and off-ramps at Grange Road. These improvements continue the work done in the district over the past few years to better connect residential and commercial areas.
“This project will improve the Grandview District by providing additional transportation options for the community,” said Engineering Director Chad Millner. “The wide sidewalks will
allow pedestrians to safely travel in the area instead of driving everywhere. It will also create safer crosswalks and improve traffic operations by building left-turn lanes where they
don’t exist today.”
Changes to be Made
Arcadia Avenue
Addition of 10-foot-wide sidewalk and ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps
New streetlights
Minnesota Highway 100
Removal of redundant on- and off-ramps and the creation of a tight diamond interchange
New noise wall along northbound on-ramp
Interlachen Boulevard and Gus Young Lane
Addition of 10-foot-wide sidewalks and ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps
New left turn lanes
New traffic signal with ADA-compliant audible crossings
New ADA-compliant entrance into Edina Liquor
Vernon Avenue and West 50th Street
Two new bridges:
New Vernon Avenue Bridge that is widened and raised to meet railroad
height requirements
New Highway 100 Bridge that creates space for the below improvements:
10-foot-wide sidewalks and ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps
Pedestrian refuge islands
New dual left-turn lanes in both east and west directions
New traffic signals with ADA-compliant audible crossings
The project will be completed in three stages. Stage 1 begins April 23 and will continue until late summer, overlapping slightly with Stage 2, which starts in early summer and runs to
early fall. Stage 3 will begin in early fall and wrap up with the project in late fall (estimated to be mid-November).
“The project is being constructed in phases to minimize traffic impacts,” Millner added. “The Highway 100 on- and off-ramps will remain open for much of the project. This will allow
people to travel in a similar manner as they do today.”
Dedicated signage and local detours will ensure continued access to businesses in the Grandview and 50th & France districts throughout the duration of the project.
To help minimize disruptions, City of Edina staff will provide ongoing communication with the public through emails, online project talks and updates on BetterTogetherEdina.org/vernon-hwy100.
Press releases and social media posts will be shared when there are major traffic changes.
Traffic Impacts and Detour Maps
Stage 1 begins April 23 when Vernon Avenue will close to thru traffic between Interlachen Boulevard/Gus Young Lane and the Minnesota Highway 100 northbound on-ramps. The primary detour
route will be Eden Avenue.
Access: Local access for residents and businesses will be maintained with clear signage and detours.
Ramp Closures: Highway 100 ramps will remain open as long as possible with closures later in the project. During the first two stages of construction, traffic exiting Highway 100 southbound
at Vernon will be detoured to Arcadia Avenue for access to Grandview businesses, the 50th & France District or to Eden Avenue.
Detour Maps: View closures and detours by construction stage using the interactive map for this project. The interactive detour map and an image version of the Stage 1 map are available
at BetterTogetherEdina.org/vernon-hwy100.
What to Expect in Later Stages
Stage 2 (early summer to early fall) will have similar traffic control measures as Stage 1, except that the intersection of Interlachen Boulevard and Vernon Avenue will be built in phases
to ensure one lane always remains open. The Highway 100 ramps are expected to remain open during this portion of the project, unless otherwise modified.
Stage 3 (fall) is expected to be the most disruptive for residents
and businesses, with most Highway 100 on- and off-ramps at Vernon and 50th
closed and longer detours in place. This stage is divided into two parts:
Stage 3A: The southbound off-ramp and all northbound on-ramps will be
closed. Detour routes will direct traffic to Minnesota Highway 62.
Stage 3B: The northbound off-ramp will be closed, with a detour via
Excelsior Boulevard.
