I’m excited to work alongside Koda to make our communities safer.” Koda is an 18-month old Belgian Malinois from Poland. He was united with Breyer in December 2024 and the two started training in February. Koda is trained in apprehension, tracking, article searches and firearms detection. Breyer and Koda are the Edina Police Department’s second active K-9 pair. Officer Nick Pedersen and K-9 Euro graduated in spring 2024. Both K-9’s will work nights, providing service to Edina and mutual aid partners. “Edina received its first police K-9 in 1972. Since then, numerous K-9 teams have had the distinction of serving the community through the years,” said Sgt. Mike Bengston, who oversees the program. “And now, Bennett and K-9 Koda are continuing to build on the high standards and success that the K-9 program has produced. They are a great team and are already a great asset to the department.” Edina’s K-9 program is funded almost entirely by the Edina Crime Prevention Fund. Aside from training, the Crime Prevention Fund supplies all equipment, food and veterinarian bills. For more information about the Edina Police Department, visit EdinaMN.gov/Police. -30-
