Vernon Avenue & Highway 100 Interchange Project Enters Stage 2; Temporary Highway 100 Closure Set for May 16-19
Edina, Minn., May 7, 2025 – Traffic changes are set to begin in the Vernon Avenue & Highway 100 Interchange project area as Stage 2 of construction starts ahead of schedule. Removal
of the bridge will take place in May.
This $28.2 million project includes replacing two bridges on Vernon Avenue, one over the Canadian Pacific Kansas City railroad and the second over Minnesota Highway 100. The old bridges
must be removed before work on the new structures can begin.
“The project is really ramping up with the removal of these two bridges, and we thank the community for their patience with the project detours, changes to traffic operations, dust and
noise,” said Engineering Director Chad Millner.
Stage 2 of Construction Scheduled to Begin Friday, May 9
Stage 2 of construction, originally scheduled to begin in early summer, has been moved up to improve traffic management in the project area.
Beginning May 9, Gus Young Lane will be closed to thru traffic from Interlachen Boulevard near Edina Liquor – Grandview to expedite construction at the intersection and help improve
traffic operations at the southbound Minnesota Highway 100 off-ramp at Arcadia Avenue.
The intersection of Interlachen and Vernon Avenue will be built in phases to ensure one lane in each direction always remains open. The traffic signal will be taken out of service to
allow for free-flowing traffic between Interlachen and Vernon.
The Vernon Avenue Bridge over the railroad will be removed during normal working hours May 9-10. Work will extend into May 11 only if something unforeseen occurs. This work will not
affect traffic.
Most Highway 100 ramps are expected to remain open during this portion of the project. The exception is the northbound on-ramp at Grange Road, which will close Wednesday, May 14, ahead
of the Highway 100 Bridge removal and remain closed until further notice. It will be too close to the work area to allow for both safe traffic operations and construction activities.
Drivers can continue to access northbound Highway 100 via the on-ramp at West 50th Street.
Dedicated signage and local detours will ensure continued access to businesses in the Grandview and 50th & France districts throughout the duration of the project.
Temporary Highway 100 Closure Scheduled for May 16-19
Highway 100 will be closed near the project area beginning 10 p.m. Friday, May 16, until 5 a.m., Monday, May 19, to allow for the safe removal of the Highway 100 Bridge on Vernon Avenue.
During this time, Highway 100 will be closed to thru traffic in both
northbound and southbound directions between Excelsior Boulevard and
Minnesota Highway 62. Work is expected to occur 24 hours a day throughout the
closure period.
Local Traffic: During the closure, access to northbound Highway 100 from West 50th Street will not be available. Access to southbound Highway 100 will remain open via Eden Avenue on
the west side of Highway 100.
