FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Free Buckthorn Dump May 17 and 18 for Edina Residents
Edina, Minn., April 30, 2025 – Edina residents can join the effort to eradicate invasive buckthorn by properly disposing of it for free during the semi-annual buckthorn dump.
Residents can drop off buckthorn brush in the lot across from Braemar Golf Dome at 7420 Braemar Blvd. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 17, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 18.
At the drop-off site, residents must show a photo ID with a current Edina address. Commercial haulers must be accompanied by the resident they are working for.
Buckthorn brush cannot be bagged, boxed or bundled. If it is, it must be removed from the container before being left at the dump.
Buckthorn is an invasive species that prevents native plants from thriving in areas that are not continuously mowed or managed. Edina encourages residents to remove it from their properties
to help prevent spread.
The City also works on removing buckthorn from parks and public land. Edina is in the second year of a three-year project to clear buckthorn and other invasive species from 44 acres
of Bredesen Park, then restore native oak savanna and wetlands. This year will include extensive seeding and planting. A $500,000 state grant and $50,000 in matching City funds are
paying for the project.
A few days before digging out any buckthorn roots on your property, call 811 or visit GopherStateOneCall.org so public utilities can be marked. Treat any cut buckthorn stumps to halt
regrowth and ensure killing the plant.
The next free buckthorn dump will be the last two weekends in October.
For more information on the buckthorn dump, contact City Forester Luther Overholt at 952-826-0308 or LOverholt@EdinaMN.gov.
