Aquatic Vegetation Point Intercept Survey Report
4/18/2025
An aquatic vegetation point intercept survey was completed in Indianhead Lake on 4/18/2025 for
the City of Edina. The point intercept survey consisted of 100 points. A meandering delineation was
also performed to detect any additional curlyleaf pondweed not in the proximity of a site. At each
site depth was recorded and vegetation was sampled with a double-sided rake. For every species
sampled, an abundance rating was assigned based on how much was sampled on the rake. The
ratings are as follows:
0. Plant species absent
1. Plant species covers <25% of the rake
2. Plant species covers 25-75% of the rake
3. Plant species covers >75% of the rake
This rating scale was taken out of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Guidance for
Delineating Aquatic Plants for Management.
Table 1: Plant species found in Indianhead Lake in 2025 with the number of sites where it was sampled and average rake
abundance when it was sampled.
0 1 2 3 Frequency Avg. Rake Abundance
Chara 0 1 3 96 100 3
Curlyleaf Pondweed 87 9 1 3 13 1.5
Small Pondweed 98 2 0 0 2 1
Curlyleaf pondweed was not highly distributed in Indianhead Lake (See figure 1), being found at
13% of sites, however, it was abundant at a few sites where it was sampled with an average rake
abundance of 1.5. Spot treatment of the highly abundant areas would be recommended. Clarity
was extremely high, so it was very easy to spot large stands of curlyleaf pondweed even in deep
areas.
Like 2024, chara spp was the most abundant plant species in Indianhead Lake (See figure 2). It was
found at all 100 sites (frequency of occurrence: 100%) with an average rake abundance of 3.
Small pondweed was an additional species sampled in 2025, being sampled at 2% of sites. Glands
and leaf tip were used to identify small pondweed.
