Aquatic Vegetation Point Intercept Survey Report
4/18/2025
An aquatic vegetation point intercept survey was completed in Melody Lake on 4/18/2025 for the
City of Edina. The point intercept survey consisted of 49 points. A meandering delineation was also
performed to detect any additional curlyleaf pondweed not in the proximity of a site. At each site
depth was recorded and vegetation was sampled with a double-sided rake. For every species
sampled, an abundance rating was assigned based on how much was sampled on the rake. The
ratings are as follows:
0. Plant species absent
1. Plant species covers <25% of the rake
2. Plant species covers 25-75% of the rake
3. Plant species covers >75% of the rake
This rating scale was taken out of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Guidance for
Delineating Aquatic Plants for Management.
0 1 2 3 Frequency Avg. Rake Abundance
Chara 45 3 1 0 8 1.1
Curlyleaf Pondweed 44 5 0 0 10 1
Common Waterweed 37 11 1 0 24 1.1
Nitella 34 9 3 3 31 1.6
Coontail 46 3 0 0 6 1
White Waterlily 46 3 0 0 6 1
Identical to 2024, curlyleaf pondweed was not abundant in Melody Lake (See figure 1). Both 2024
and 2025 CLP was found at 5 sites (frequency of occurrence: 10%) with an average rake abundance
of 1 at sites where it was collected. Albeit, the same frequency, sites where it was collected were all
different between the two years.
Common waterweed decreased from 2024 to 2025. In 2024 common waterweed was sampled at
82% of sites. In 2025, it was found at 12 sites with a frequency of occurrence of 24% with an
average rake abundance of 1.1 at the sites where it was collected (figure 2).
Nitella spp was found at 16 sites (frequency of occurrence: 31%) with an average rake abundance
of 1.6 at the sites where it was collected (See figure 3).
Coontail was found at 3 sites (frequency of occurrence: 6%) with an average rake abundance of 1 at
the sites where it was collected.
White waterlily was sampled at 3 sites with a average rake abundance of 1 (Figure 5).
