Braemar’s leadership in adaptive programming through its longstanding collaboration with Courage Kenny, alongside the resources and community spirit of Edina, make this championship more than an event—it’s a celebration of what’s possible when organizations work together to break down barriers.” City staff were thrilled Braemar was chosen for the event. “Braemar Golf Course and the City of Edina are excited to partner with the MGA to host these incredible athletes,” said Braemar Golf Course General Manager Joe Abood. “The goal is to make the Minnesota Adaptive Open one of the premier championships in the country.” PGA Director of Golf Tommy Koehler agreed. “It is a tremendous honor for us here at Braemar Golf Course to be selected as the inaugural host for the Minnesota Adaptive Open,” he said. “To be chosen as the inaugural host site is a testament to the City of Edina’s investment in adaptive sports. We’re looking forward to an amazing three days in September and look forward to helping the Minnesota Golf Association run a first-class event.” Braemar staff has been busy planning and securing volunteers for the event. Braemar has received volunteer registrations from more than 50 community members who are just as excited as staff to make this a great event. The Minnesota Adaptive Open will be contested over 36 holes of stroke play on Braemar’s championship 18-hole golf course. The championship is open to professionals and amateurs, with intellectual, neurological, sensory or physical impairments, who have a World Ranking for Golfers with Disability Pass as well as an authorized World Handicap System Handicap Index. The field will consist of 40 players, including Max Togisala of Clearfield, Utah, who is ranked No. 1 as a seated player and finished in the top 10 (6th place men’s overall) at the recent U.S. Adaptive Open in June. Local golfers include Andrew Bergland, Kyle Erickson, Tim Herrmann, Nic Urban and Justin VanLanduit, among others, while the balance of the field hails from 14 states across the country. On Friday, Sept. 26, Courage Kenny, Braemar staff and the MGA will host a free adaptive golf clinic from 4 to 5 p.m. at Braemar’s practice area. Open to the public, participants should register at www.golfgenius.com/ggid/ev3y9c/register. The original 1958 pool pump house needs significant updates to accommodate changes in State Code related to pumping apparatus, filter requirements, electrical capacity, and surge tank reservoirs to address capacity displacement. This includes work to mechanical, electrical, plumbing and structural improvements to the pump house room. “The deteriorating infrastructure poses operational risks, safety concerns and compliance issues, which could force facility closures if left unaddressed,” said Facility Manager Derik Otten. “Time is of the essence, as delays in addressing these issues could lead to further deterioration, higher repair costs and potential closure of the facility.” Ten days before the opening of the Edina Aquatic Center in 2021, a mechanical failure occurred. Because the systems are obsolete, used parts were used as an interim solution, allowing the facility to reopen. That year, the Edina Aquatic Center opened more than a week later than expected. Otten’s team has been working since to make plans to update the Aquatic Center’s infrastructure to make sure it doesn’t happen again. The filter room will be built this fall since the Aquatic Center has closed for the season. It will be constructed adjacent to the original pump house, creating additional deck space around the swimming pool above. The Parks & Recreation Department plans to use that space for cabanas and additional shaded seating areas. H+U Construction was awarded the $8.4 million project and is expected to complete the project by May 2026. In other business last month, the Council: •Approved a redevelopment plan for a new affordable housing project by Homes Within Reach at 316 Madison Ave. •Changed the rates of the City’s utility franchise fees for natural gas and electricity providers. Beginning Jan. 1, residential properties will pay a 4% franchise fee instead of a flat rate, determined to be a more equitable way to generate revenue since the fee is proportionate to customers’ rate of energy consumption. The City uses this money to fund sustainability programs, pedestrian and cyclist improvements, street reconstruction and street lighting. •Received results of the 2025 Quality of Life Survey. •Issued electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian a conditional-use permit to open a showroom at the Galleria Edina. •Transferred ownership of the former Public Works site at 5146 Eden Ave. from the Housing & Redevelopment Authority (HRA) to the City. The HRA recently reviewed several offers to purchase the site and redevelop it for a combination of housing and commercial uses with a limited amount of outdoor public space. Through this process, the HRA identified a development team that it recommends purchase and redevelop the site. Before a purchase contract is prepared, the transfer from the HRA to the City is necessary so that when the property is sold, the sales proceeds will be directed to the City of Edina. The Council will next meet 7 p.m. Sept. 2 and 16. For more information, visit EdinaMN.gov. – COMPILED BY JENNIFER BENNEROTTE 952-927-8861 | mail@EdinaMN.govCity of Edina EdinaMN.gov4
