FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Fall Tree Sale Features 14 Varieties at Less Than Half Price
Edina, Minn., Aug. 1, 2025 – Edina residents and property owners can purchase one or two new trees at less than half their usual cost during the City’s fall tree sale.
The 250 available trees are $50 each and will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The sale will open at 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 8, at bit.ly/edinatreesale.
The fall sale features 14 species, from fruit trees to conifers to shade trees. At pickup, most trees will be 4 to 8 tall, so they have a healthy start, but are still easy to plant in
a yard. All are climate adaptable and grow well in Minnesota.
The sale is in partnership with Tree Trust and is part of reaching the City’s Climate Action Plan goal to increase tree canopy from 36% to 43% by 2040.
“This is a great way to reestablish neighborhood tree canopy and allow residents to shop a good selection of trees at a reasonable cost for their own property,” said City Forester Luther
Overholt.
Buyers can choose between the following trees in the fall sale:
Fruit: Triumph Apple, Mount Royal Plum
Small to Mid-size: Blue Beech
Flowering:, Minnesota Redbud, Prairifire Crabapple, North Star Cherry
Conifer: Red Pine, Eastern Red Cedar
Shade Trees: Triumph Elm, Presidential Gold Gingko, Swamp White Oak, Hackberry, American Linden, Whitespire Birch
To learn more about each species, view photos, and read about planting tips, visit bit.ly/edinatreesale. If you are unsure which tree is best for your property, email city_trees@treetrust.org
and the Tree Trust’s Community Forest Department will assist you.
The sale will close at 4 p.m. Sept. 26. Purchased trees will be available for pickup from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10 or 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, October 11. Pickup will be at Braemar
Golf Dome, 7420 Braemar Blvd. Bring your receipt and a tarp or covering to protect your car. Buyers who can’t make those pickup times can have another person pick up their trees.
All trees will come with planting information and a complimentary bag of mulch, courtesy of Tree Trust. The City of Edina is also providing a free bag of compost made from the City’s
curbside organics recycling program.
Optional add-ons are available to protect and help establish your young tree.
Include them in your tree order to pick up with your tree:
Tree guard ($3) to protect young trees from rabbits, deer or rodents.
Watering bag ($21) holds 20 gallons and needs to be filled only once
every 5 to 7 days to provide your tree adequate water.
Fall is “the best time to plant a tree,” according to Overholt.
It gives them time to establish their roots before winter sets in, and then when spring comes, they are ready for rapid growth.
