On that date, most Highway 100 ramps at Vernon Avenue and West 50th Street will close, with the exception of the southbound on-ramp at Eden Avenue. The closures are expected to last until mid-November. The original plans for construction included closing the remaining ramps in phases. But to reduce disruption during the busy summer months, the southbound exit ramp was kept open longer than scheduled. Now, as Stage 3B begins, all the remaining ramps in the immediate bridge area will close at the same time, allowing crews to work more efficiently on the new bridge and keep it on track for completion by late fall. “We understand this will be a very difficult phase for traffic,” said Engineering Director Chad Millner. “The closure provides enough space for the contractor to safely complete the work by mid-November. Any other way would prolong the construction schedule around Highway 100. Please practice patience as you drive in the area, and remember businesses are open and accessible.” What’s Closed (Sept. 15 through Mid-November) Northbound Highway 100 on-ramp at Vernon/West 50th Northbound Highway 100 exit ramp at Grange Road to Vernon/West 50th Southbound Highway 100 exit ramp at Vernon/West 50th to Arcadia Avenue What’s Open Southbound Highway 100 on-ramp at Eden Avenue Other project closures remain in effect, including no thru traffic on Vernon within the construction zone and continued work at the Vernon and Interlachen Boulevard intersection. Detours Signed detour routes will help guide drivers to and from Vernon and West 50th while the Highway 100 ramps are closed. Drivers needing to exit Highway 100 in the area will have two options: one leading toward Vernon and the Grandview District, and another leading toward West 50th and the 50th & France District. Northbound Highway 100 On-Ramp Detour Take southbound Highway 100 from Eden Avenue, then eastbound Highway 62 to return to northbound Highway 100. Local traffic may also use frontage roads and the northbound on-ramp at Benton Avenue. Update on the Vernon Avenue Bridge Over the Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railroad Work to complete the second bridge on Vernon Avenue over the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) railroad is delayed. In May, crews struck a buried power line near the west support that was not located where expected based on construction plans or on-site utility markings. The line must be relocated before work can continue. Because it lies within CPKC’s right-of-way and is not covered under an existing agreement with Xcel Energy, additional approvals are required between CPKC and Xcel, and the two organizations have not yet secured a permit to relocate the line. Until that happens, no updated schedule or cost information can be provided. Local traffic in the Grandview area will continue to use Eden Avenue as the east-west detour until the railroad bridge is complete. Another press release will be issued about the railroad bridge once a timeline is known. About the Project The $28.2 million Vernon Avenue & Highway 100 Interchange project is a joint effort between the City of Edina, Hennepin County and the Minnesota Department of Transportation and includes replacing two bridges on Vernon Avenue, one over the CPKC railroad and the other over Highway 100. The project will also improve nearby intersections and eliminate redundant Highway 100 access ramps in favor of a standard tight diamond interchange.  The new bridge over Highway 100 will create space for these improvements: 10-foot-wide sidewalks and ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps Pedestrian refuge islands New dual left-turn lanes in both east and west directions New traffic signals with ADA-compliant audible crossings The new bridge over the railroad will be widened and raised to meet railroad height requirements Stay Informed The City of Edina is committed to minimizing disruptions by keeping residents, businesses and the traveling public informed throughout construction. Press releases and social media posts will be shared when there are major traffic changes. Learn more about the project at BetterTogetherEdina.org/vernon-hwy100.
